 Posted: Mon Jul 08, 2013 3:10 pm Post subject: Clothing, Hair, Makeup for Female Teachers..a la Girly Girls |

| This may seem like a very stupid question...but as a white woman in my mid-late twenties who very much likes to wear makeup, clothes shop, and in general be "girly", how much will this be affected by moving to Korea? I come from a somewhat conservative background so don't dress like a "*beep*", but I have to admit that I would find roughing it difficult...I can keep to a schedule and am responsible, but am a little afraid that I will have to rearrange my entire feminine worldview/personality to a more business oriented one (power heels, suits, having a stoic and loud demeanor) and as a sensitive female good with children....that is just not where I'm coming from. I have been complimented many times on my ability to teach children, especially with art, but I wonder if going over there is just a bad idea based on my somewhat Luna Lovegood/ Parvati Patil personality...will I be eaten alive or could this be an asset? I heard that hogwans want more of a co teacher that can be good with children and participate with them vs a stern disciplinarian, and that Koreans are very into clothes/ going out. I'm sorry if this is a mess of a post but I'm not sure how well to articulate this...I guess basically can a white girly girl get along in Korea or is this the wrong country? |

In Korea, if in doubt opt for the latter!

I read this as I have problems keeping my mouth shut - BIG problem in Korea!
Also I’d say that you are more likely to be working with a woman - and I think there is potential for your 'personality' to clash with theirs.

Feminine? Girly? A) You'll fit right in. B) What did you say your number was again? (Lol)
No, seriously, a lot of Korean women here dress quite feminine and stylish. You'll fit right in. Clothes can be small and tight depending on your own frame. Surprising considering how tall Koreans are getting lately and some even getting chubby.
That said, if you're a smaller size, you should have no problems. If you're a larger size, you may have to stock up the suitcase. Either way, realize it's really insanely humid here in summer and that should factor into your dressing as much as possible. (Winters are cold, so don't neglect the insulated boots and long johns either. Winter clothes sold here suck, in my opinion.)

You'll fit right in. And if you're sized like a Korean girl, then even better. Koreans have some fascination/two-faced/stockerish mentality toward foreigners and many want to befriend a foreigner. It's even in there school text books "I want a foreign friend. How can I get one?"...
Also, if you are good looking, beware of the guys. Well, because they're guys and usually there is one thing they are thinking about. |

Thank you for the replies! I do see there seems to be bomb shopping in Seoul so I'm excited about that.
One thing, though:

how did you get this from what I said? That's a rather misogynistic thing to say.
Anyway, thanks for the replies so far....
I was not trying to communicate, by the way, that I'm a valley girl...quite the opposite. I'm just not a backpacker by any stretch of the imagination. |

| Try for public elementary school, it's 95% females. They love internet shopping, and occasional teaching. |

They are characters out of harry potter..
Also if your a girly girl you will fit right in..
Even if you are a little bigger there are still clothes you can get here it is just a little more difficult..
if you are an unusual size in underwear compared to korea..aka large*hem hem* assets.. then do pack that..
but we have HnM and forever 21 in seoul..and those sizes can fit the larger ladies..
just beware that if you are extra curvy in the hips..it might be difficult for pants and trousers..but then again there is always itaewon..
If you are normal or small you should have no problems at all finding clothes and such.. |

I say be yourself, don't change a thing and capitalize on every and any positive feedback you get.
You're fine just the way you are.
Just make sure that you're below 110 pounds when you get here and stay that way until you leave. 100 would be better.  |

Why wouldn't a girlie girl fit in perfectly as long as it doesn't include an early midnight run after finding out the position wasn't what you thought it would be. But then again that whole scenario would probably be head on with what the Korean system brings in.

yeah in fact the only thing you have to worry about i think about not fitting in is not fitting in with the foreigner women, not the korean women. most of the foreign population here haven't really caught on to the "not dressing like a bum/hobo/child/indiana jones/hippie/high schooler" thing yet. |
