Quote:
Despite the real names of the pilots being readily available to the media, the newscaster rattled off the list of pilots names as “Captain Sum Ting Wong,” “Wi Tu Lo,” “Ho Lee Fuk,” and “Bang Ding Ow.”

...and this coming from a station in the bay area.

Is it really racist?

Whatever the answer, it's pretty funny, and an indication of how terrible news reporting is these days all over the world (see also: Korea)

Can't believe the anchor got through reading the names without a light going off.

Perhaps the lights were on, but obviously nobody was home.

Racist and disrespectful to the dead. Even racists and frat boys should frown on this.

I will agree with ya on the last point - it's sad that something like this so easily slipped past these professionals.

The guy is ignorant, but unless it was intentional it wasn't racist.

Plus it is hard to top the Korean anchor and his comment about how fortunate it was that the the victims were Chinese and not Korean.

Why do some of ya'll feel the need to defend this station by posting about Korea?

Obviously, the fact-checker screwed up or maybe they just wanted to get fired. I doubt it was intentional.

Because it gives you a glimpse of real of racism, as opposed to just some high school level high jinx.

The sort of racism that so innate and normalized that it comes out without censure or awareness. Compared to some low brow rubbish making fun of Chinese names.

Is it racist to use the characteristics of a culturally derived naming system to create words in a totally different language that comments (in a tasteless way) about a specific event?

I'm not sure it is.

Koreans use racist ads about white men with big noses, so what's good for goose. . .

I thought this news clip was hilarious by the way.

And how is it racist making fun of the way the Chinese language sounds?

What color race is Chinese Language? Idiot. Everyone cries racism and they doesn't even know what it means.

We must come up with a new "ist" word for poking fun at different languages. Languagists? Are you a languagist? So stupid.

What irks me is that the Korean press are always quick to shout racism when it is something that they perceive as offensive, yet they themselves are one of the worst offenders.

As anyone who has ever read a Korean news article about English teachers can attest, they regularly show racist cartoons about white people. The big nosed white man being a popular one, along with the Der Stuermer-esque cartoons of demonic foreign teachers preying upon Korean school children.
