It's good you can have a sense of humor about it(seriously, you should write a blog) but I think you are lucky that those situations did not, uh, get out of hand.

As deeply disturbing as it was I don't think the old men wanted to do anything more than show themselves off. They didn't seem particularly predatory as they just sort of went "baaaa" and stood there like they'd pulled a rabbit out of a hat. In fact with the first guy it led to what felt like an excruciating moment of social awkwardness as I had just got into the elevator when he stood outside the doors and whipped it out. In my panic I was repeatedly jabbing the door open button instead of the close which led to this bizarre extended moment of neither of us knowing what the hell to do. If anything he seemed a bit put out that I wasn't able to run away screaming. Obviously I thank every deity out there that he didn't try and get in the elevator but I don't think that was really what he was trying to do.
Like I said I don't know anyone else here that this has happened to but I've plenty of friends back home who have had similar experiences (not all on the same day however). I'd say it's as common in Korea as it is anywhere else. |
