bbc news reported that the captain of a korean vessel attempted suicide when his ship was boarded and inspected (16/7/13).

Panama's president says his country has seized a North Korean-flagged ship carrying "undeclared military cargo".

President Ricardo Martinelli told local media that the ship, which was sailing from Cuba, contained suspected "sophisticated missile equipment".

He posted a photo of what looked like a large green object inside a cargo container on his Twitter account.

He said the ship, which was searched as it passed through the Panama Canal, was being held for further investigation.

Under UN sanctions, North Korea is banned from weapons exports and the import of all but small arms.

Sanctions were strengthened after its third nuclear test on 12 February, including measures increasing states' authority to inspect suspicious cargo.

The ship was stopped near Manzanillo on the Atlantic side of the canal.

Mr Martinelli said the authorities were checking the ship for drugs when they found the suspected weapons in containers of brown sugar.

"We're going to keep unloading the ship and figure out exactly what was inside," he told local media.

The crew have been detained, including the captain who the Panamanian president said tried to kill himself during the search.

The North Koreans involved in military operations are so brain washed they often will commit suicide for the cause of their glorious country and the Dear Leader. The suicide greatly suggests he had a military position of some type.

Panama: Cuba 'Owns' North Korean Ship Arms
Sky News – 45 minutes ago.

Cuba has claimed it owns the arms that were found on board a North Korean ship that Panama has impounded.

Panama has called for United Nations investigators to inspect the shipment of missile parts found on the Chong Chon Gang as it tried to enter the Panama Canal last week.

The contraband munitions were hidden under thousands of bags labelled "Cuban Raw Sugar", Panama said.

Cuba claimed ownership in a statement on state television, saying the Soviet-era missile system parts were to be repaired and returned - without mentioning where they were being sent.

Cuba said the shipment contained "obsolete" weaponry "manufactured in the mid-20th century", including anti-aircraft missile arrays, nine disassembled missiles, two MiG-21 Bis jets and 15 engines.

If its "obsolete", why bother to get it repaired?
