I am thinking of wiring some money home to the U.K. If I do it tomorrow, with all the paperwork needed to do it for the first time, how long will it be before it arrives in my account in the U.K.? How many days will it take?
It turns out that I want to send money home soon.

When I wire to the US, it usually arrives with 3-6 hours.

Depending on the middle bank, bamk operating hours here and there and when YOUR bank there does their daily postings it can take from as little as a few hours to as long as 3 days for a direct bank to bank wire/deposit.

If you use someone like Western Union to send money to someone it will be there within an hour or 2 (but you pay dearly (as high as 20%) for it).

Why are you worried about the timing? Need to make a drug deal or something? Normally, time is not an issue.

It will depend on which day you do it. I wired money to the U.S. on a Friday (in Korea) and it didn't show up until Tuesday or Wednesday (in Korea). For me, the bank wasn't able to process it until they reopened and by that time, it was the weekend in the states. But as ttompatz said, it should be anywhere between a few hours to three days
