Ive been noticing this phenomenon for a while now. Wether on this board, socially or otherwise.
Ive observed that a lot of americans, seem have a big chip (or should I say 'fry') on their shoulders about citizens of the united kingdom, specifically England.
Last night for example, I was introduced to an american guy. After a few minutes of talking to my friend, I made a joke quoting the simpsons. He turned to me and said "oh, so you do like something about america then?". considering Id never even mentioned the good ole US during my conversation, i thought he seemed a little bit on the defensive.
He then proceeded to challenge me to an arm wrestle and kept badgering me for one. seeing where this was going, I bid my farewells and left.
This isnt a one off either. I observed instances like this a lot with my friends when we're out. Usually, it sounds something like 'why do you think you're so great? you're not, you're shit and if it wasn't for us, you'd all be dead!" because we ask the time, make a joke, challenge an assumption or something.
Ive also been told by a few americans that the British are pretentious, because of our accents??? Im sorry, but i use the accent I was raised with - i never intended to cause any offence.
Somewhere along the way, you decided that if the Irish fart, its like poetry and if the British speak, its an insult.
If anyone could shed any light on this, id be most obliged.
Anyway, I just wanted to say, we Brits don't hate you, so you don't have to hate us either.
What ever it is you feel threatened by us, don't worry, we're pretty harmless.
peace!

I remember one time playing XBOX Live, some kid asked a Scottish guy if they had McDonalds. That joke never got old. |

It's not just the Americans who don't think much of the English, I can assure you that a lot of Australians, South Africans and New Zealanders don't like you guys much, either.
Maybe when alone you can be okay, but a bunch of Brits together and the pompousness and arrogance soon becomes unbearable. If you have to start an OP to ask why, well, then you quite clearly you're incapable of recognizing your flaws to begin with, which is arrogant. |

ok, an honest answer. So do you mean my personal flaws as to why all nationalities hate us or our flaws as a country?
If its not personal, then surely its racist, isn't it? |

i actually laughed out loud when i read that by the way. The image of a bunch of brits standing around being 'pompous and arrogant' is like something out of a monty python sketch. 'oh, i say old bean... etc etc.). |

I'm a Brit and I hate groups of Brits abroad!
But I equally hate groups of Americans and (Some Aussies).
I find NZ'lers to be great in a group and SA (and Irish till they get messed up!)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All mix equally well till beer is involved!
btw - there was a TV show a few years ago on a UK TV station that did a psychological experiment, putting different nationalities in the same hotel abroad and had them do different task in their groups.
It was funny to watch - and all the stereotypes came out!
Can anyone remember the name?
There must be a torrent of it out there somewhere! |

I am a Brit, never had a problem with any South African, Aussie or Kiwi - the Aussies and Kiwis are far more closer to us culturally than the Americans and apart from a bit of friendly joshing over sport - never had anything serious happen.
Americans like to talk about our evil little empire and the bad influence we have been in history whilst ignoring their own history, one day last year during the 25th anniversary of the invasion on the Falklands. A load of Americans started trying to give me a hard time about giving the Falklands back to Argentina, (without bothering to ask my opinion on the subject).
Me: 'How many bloody Islands all over the world do you have?'
Americans: '?'
Me: 'Guam, Samoa, Hawaii, Puerto Rico' Why don't you start with your own country and the islands under your control first.
As for the OP commenting on the 'Alpha Male' crap the yank tried to pull - he would have been in his rights to take the whopper outside and walloped him - what a *beep*.
As for Brit-pack mentality abroad, it exists and it is annoying but you rarely see it in Korea, more than likely in places like Spain, Thailand and various stag party cities in Eastern Europe.
NB: Disclaimer here, I have met loads of great Americans and some of them I consider to be good friends, but they tend to be the best and worst of the people you meet. |

It was the Normans who invaded and colonised Ireland, they invaded and colonised England too. Then it was the Scots who settled on 'plantations' in Ulster. Very few of the earliest actions regarding the colonisation of Ireland were committed by the actual English.
Are you Irish? Well, it is thanks to British colonialism and the killing of your language that you have a job as a native speaker, teaching and spreading the oppressors language in Korea - clouds and silver linings etc.

I have met quite a few people from various parts of the world. In all honesty, I find people of all nations to possess objectionable traits of some sort, which seriously irritate people from other parts of the world. It is kind of inevitable.
Conceit is something I've witnessed in losers from all parts of the globe.
I kind of gave up on humanity around 2003. The best way to avoid nauseating people is to only engage with them when you go shopping, for example.
Otherwise, I'd recommend that you fulfil your natural desire for human contact mostly online. I realize this is a strange idea but it works for me. People (in person) are a major headache nowadays, wherever they are from. In some circles, it is considered a sign of strength to be inconsiderate, odious and very rude just for the sake of it. That's 2013 for you! |

Weird. I've never met a fellow American who had a dislike for Brits. I've certainly seen snark directed towards Canadians though (such as what you described in your original post) and vice versa... |
