Hundreds (mix of both genders) that I know of are at the decade (or more) point.
About 1/2 of them got married (but not to a Korean) while over here.

Do I regret moving to Korea? F@ck no! I was born and brought up in a sh!thole. My family all tell me to stay in Korea because "there's nothing for you back here".
The American twats complaining about not getting good enough beer, and not being able to enjoy a circle w@nk with their friends' bands, need to spend a couple of years living where I'm from. |

Why not just move back to a different part of the country? [I'm Canadian so most of it is cold, but I always found it strange Americans would live in Detroit or Chicago when they could live in Atlanta or Phoenix.] |

I had no problems with Korea really. Actually a lot of lifer waygooks I met were unhappy mostly because of their jobs and the things that made Korea appealing for the 15 years earlier (dating opportunities and partying with lots of disposable income) lost their lustre or just weren't possible anymore (especially dating...once the skin starts to sag...well...). If they had different jobs maybe things would be better.
For me I just thought long term. In the short term Korea was awesome but if youre not going to stay forever and teach esl for a career in asia, then you might as well get out sooner or later. Call me selfish but I wasn't going to marry a korean because I didn't want to be supporting someone on an ESL salary or supporting someone in canada. Of all the guys I know who married Japanese and Korean women and went back because they hated being trapped by esl, most of their wives work minimum wage paying jobs they hate because their education isn't recognized or their english isn't good enough
Actually i think Patrick is the only guy ESL guy I met or heard from that married a k or Jwoman and DOES NOT have huge issues with finances once the middle ages hit and their children needed more support.
Then again Patrick has a pretty good job and while I dont know the guy on a personal level I simply do not believe his life in Canada and Korea are 'same same.' Having a Fed job in Canada is pretty damn good ( i know because I have one), especially if you have kids. Raising 2 kids in Korea depending on university 1-2 year contracts that can change at the drop of a hat, all the while scrambling to do privates and other quasi esl work (editing etc) while your wife says we need more money doesn't sound too appealing when I am 50.
I also knew I had to get out because (and this is huge) I don't want to live in a place into my middle ages where I would have to explain myself all the time as what Im doing in Korea and why I have lived there so long. Some lifers can just block it out and live in their little bubble but I can't. It is their country and if I'm going to live their a long time I DO care about what the general population thinks. Being treated like a second class citizen or the same way as backpacker esl noobs get would become increasingly irritating as I got older. I also don't trust the Korean economy and with the generational shift, SK is in for a rough time. More than canada anyway.
I also can't take cramped living conditions, pollution and never being able to get away from people. Last week I went into quebec on one of the many lakes. cracked some beers, great swimming, clean air, absolute bliss. NO ONE but my friends and I. Korea is just flat hot and crowded but hey different strokes for different folks.
The one thing I miss about Korea is yes...the dating...however there are plenty of korean women in my canadian city studying english or as uni students The great thing is that many I have dated aren't hung up on what other koreans think because they are in canada. I actually find dating easier here than in Korea. You actually get plus points for being able to speak korean and NOT being an ESL teacher.

My home town is a shithole. I had a nightmare last night about being back home. It fucking sucked. I woke up chuffed as f@ck that I live in Korea. Some asshat complained about the tv. Get a life you soppy git.
Would it be nicer if Korea had better pubs with a larger variation of rotating beers on tap. Of course it would.
It would also be nice if back home drunks and junkies didn't piss in the landing of my apartment building.
I go home regularly and everyone is envious as f@ck. Just because your rich middle class daddy thinks teaching esl is a waste of time for his little dipshit doesn't mean the rest of us think it's a waste of time. Some of us have a plan. I'm going to learn Korean then become a famous comedian, because i'm a sh!t ton funnier than the fat foreign f@ckface currently doing the rounds on Korean tv.
Some poster mentioned he was banking 30,000 squid a year. His wife is out working as well. He knows the score and I bet his wife is a stunner. That guys got his shit sorted. He's not complaining because when he's not making money he's banging his sweet ass wife.
Beats the f@ck out of living in a council flat living on the dole. |

I acknowledge that for some, Korea is way better than back home, but let's not exaggerate. The jobs for expats, Korean speaking or not, are very limited in scope. I would think many leave not because they hate Korea, but because they don't want to teach over the long term.
As for the fat Aussie on TV, I consider him an untalented and useless idiot, but then again, that is more of a reflection of Koreans than the Aussie. |

That's true enough. I can't afford to live in the good areas though, unless I get a mortgage that will put me in the hole till I die. F@ck that! Then I need to get a car because the bus or train is full of scum. That's another expenditure. And whatever I earn gets taxed to f@ck.
The NHS is going down the shitter and there are too many scroungers on the dole compared to people in employment. The pension system is f@cked as well.
All the character in the world isn't going to sort any of the problems the UK is facing. If you can head home and get by then I salute you. But to look down on the people who enjoy living in Korea is a wank-stain move. |
