Aware that the government medical insurance doesn't do much in the way of serious medical problems (cancer, that kind of thing), my wife and I are looking into extra medical insurance right now. Once insurer we talked to quoted us 130,000/person/month, which is more than I thought it would be. We don't know the details of what's covered right now (we haven't looked into it much yet), but before we explore options any further, is that kind of price normal?

It is if it includes life insurance as well as medical cover.

Go to the post office. I hear they have low-cost insurance.

I have three private insurance policies other than NHIC, and the cost of all three combined is right around 150,000 KRW per month. that includes a life insurance rider on all of them. So, to answer your question, 130,000 KRW per month is way out of line. You should check into some other options available to you and then make a choice. If you want my personal recommendation for the companies I would suggest, just send a PM to me and I'll be happy to tell you about the policies I currently have.

Hi,

I have private insurance as well. We went through Meritz. I think I pay about 40,000 a month for it. Covers pretty much everything..
