I'd say Korea is pretty good in movie theater etiquette. I was watching movies at Pifan 2013 and most of the time, nobody talked during the movie. I did have to tell to shut up this woman with her boyfriend, and he told me I had a bad attitude. I told him you shouldn't talk during a movie and he shut up. I was ready for words after the film ended but he just left with his woman. Another incident was a bunch of ajummas who wouldn't shut up while watching one movie, but hey, complaints about ajummas are nothing new.

On another note, I've noticed that expats have a problem with talking during movies. I have no problem with laughing or gasps, though.

In contrast, the Philippines is HORRIBLE in this regard. People are yapping away, answering their cell phones or just commenting on this and that during the film, and I have to constantly tell people to shut up. My strategy while in the Phils is to watch films in rich areas because people in those areas tend to have better manners.

Dude- you sound like you're coming unglued from your Tron helmet! Everyone loves a quiet theatre, it generally- almost universally- happens in Korea, but a film festival is a different scene. This is why films get booed at Cannes and walked out on in Tribeca. It's a critical thing, not a rude thing. Were others standing up and screeching? No?

I was just saying that the film festival he mentioned as too loud for him could be a different critical viewing than he was used to.
Never watched Transformers 3 in a Manila shopping mall, so I can't speak to your claims of cell phone use.

You have groups of friends seeing a film together, and they act as if the theater is like a restaurant or cafe.

In the Phils, if you see expensive movies, as in an Imax 3-D one, you're less likely to have rude people.

Never had a problem with people talking while watching a movie. It's the texting that kills me. That bright screen really draws my attention away from the movie.

I agree about the texting, then you have peeps who answer the phone in the middle of a movie.

In the U.S., you can get thrown out of a movie for talking. Wish that was the case in all countries.

I found the people to be generally polite and respectful in Korea. Very, very few problems. This coming from a person who goes to the movies at least once a month.

China, however is a whole new ball game. Kids are running around the theater using their phones as flashlights as the parents yap extremely loud into their cellphones.

Chinese etiquette sucks.

I've never had a problem with loud people at any cinema in Korea. It is funny when no one gets a joke, and you're the only one laughing, or listening to the delayed reactions due to the time spent reading the subtitles.

During Iron Man 3 there was mass hysteria in the cinema when the cameraman in the truck told Tony Stark his name. It wasn't intentional but somehow the name was hilarious for Koreans. Did this yuckfest happen to anyone else?

Yep, same. I watched it with my middle schoolers & "Gary" is the name of one of the guys on Running Man, a popular tv show. Likely the first time they'd heard that name outside that context.

This is a great site for information about movie times and opening dates.
