|
|
I'm going to Jeju with my woman this week. She wants to stay in Seogwipo and go to Udo for a couple of hours. The only thing I want to see in Jeju is the microbrewery Boris Brewery, but in the attempt to be a decent boyfriend I thought I should try to see more than the bottom of a beer glass.
So I need some help. What are the "must see" parts of Jeju? The creme de la creme.
Also any recommendations for accommodation in Seogwipo would be good. |

The Lonely Planet has a lot of stuff listed that you can see in Jeju. A lot of it is accessible by a bus that goes around the island. It's all worth seeing and a lot of it has to do with the vulcanim that seems to be ubiquitous to the island. |

Defintely rent ATVs on Udo. Are you guys renting a car? If not, it will be very difficult to see many things. |

Thanks for the tip but my breakfast is always a banana and orange juice.

I want to know the best bits though.

Good man. That's my first tip.
1. Rent an ATV on Udo.
I'm thinking of hiring a taxi for a couple of hours to show me the highlights. I don't want to rent a car because I haven't driven a car for 10 years. |

I went to Jeju a few years ago with my girlfriend.
We rented a car and it made me despise of Korean drivers; still to this very day.
Anyway, we stayed 3 nights there in different places. Didn't pay more than 50,000 for a motel room.
We saw/visited:
Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. Very beautiful to watch the sunrise even though I am not an early riser.
Geomunoreum Lava Tube System. It was good but saw better one's elsewhere.
Yongcheon Cave. It's a cave. It was big but still a cave.
O'Sulloc Museum. Nice to take pictures among the green tea fields and buy a green tea ice cream after.
Jeju Folk Village Museum. It's traditional, nice swings though. Nothing much else to tell here.
Jeju Love Land. Go there to see Korean couples, old and young, walk awkwardly around it; while you, as a foreigner can pose ridiculously next to giant cocks.
Cheonjiyeon Falls/Cheonjeyeon Falls. I think we saw these 2. Watch out for the sprawl of tourists [yes, you Chinese folk] who have a habit of just standing or walking into your photo shot.
Beaches? We only stayed for a while at Hyeopjae Beach.
Probably did some other stuff. Will edit this post if more things pop into my head. |

Also, if you don't have a license, you won't be able to rent one. So...hopefully your lady has a license, and then you can just let her ride it out of sight of the owner, and then you can drive later on. |

My woman can't even ride a bike, never mind a car. Not to worry though, I have a license.
Keep the suggestions coming. Remember, just the good stuff. None of your shite for this guy, s'il vous plait. |

Udo island - rent a scooter & go to the black sand beach & caves you can walk / swim in depending on the tide
Olle Walking Trail # 7 -
you'll come to the top of steep wooden steps.
Look out into the ocean at about 10:00 in your vision.
You'll see two giant rocks.
The rock on the left will look like a giant shark fin (Shark rock)- that's how you'll know you're in the right place.
Walk down the wooden steps & over the rocks to a natural salt water swimming pool.
It's a different color than the ocean - much more aqua blue.
You can jump off a small 'cliff' into the pool or just float in the pool.
I'm not a string swimmer & I had NO problem staying afloat for 1/2 hour or so. |

You hit the nail on the head with the Boris Brewery. Just camp out there and enjoy. As for Seogwipo, just a slightly cleaner version of your typical dirty little fishing village. Lots of cheap flights out of Jeju going someplace else. |

I'm back from Jeju and it was brilliant. There were some arse-pieces down their trying to tell me and my woman what to do but we straightened them out.
Thanks for all the advice.
We went to the waterfall and a lake in Seogwipo. It was good. Took lots of photos. We rented a taxi to take us to these places but had to argue with the driver about where we would go. She told us that we should go to Loveland and some shitty museum. I usually let my woman deal with Koreans because she can put up with arseholes, as proven by dating me, better than I can. After about 15 minutes of the driver trying to make us go somewhere we didn't want to I decided to speak up. With me and my woman berating the silly cow who was driving us she soon conceded defeat. What a fucking hassle though.
Anyway, we were staying at a pension in the middle of nowhere. It was a beaut. The place was lovely. Aircon in every room, a heart shaped bath, a shower, individual couple sinks. A proper bed with pillows as soft as a nice pair of *beep*. The best part was that it was owned by a young couple who stayed out of our way. The gave us privacy to do whatever we wanted. They gave us a present when we were leaving because we kept the pension so tidy. I said "that's just good manners though". Everyone was well impressed. The name of the place is 느리게 가는 구름 (Cloud that goes Slowly). If you're going to Jeju and want some privacy book this place.
We also went to Udo Island. That was brilliant. We rented a scooter and I drove us around. There was a nice beach there that wasn't too busy. My woman and I mucked about in the water for a bit. It was good. A lot of Koreans were driving those ATVs. It was like an episode of wacky races. These fuckers were bouncing off of walls and shit. Some dumb *beep* drove a ATV into the sea. I saw 5 guys trying to pull it out from the rocks and sea area. I pished my pants laughing. What a clown!
That night we went to Boris Brewery. It was okay. We're a bit spoiled being up in Seoul, where we have access to some great beers (Magpie pale ale and Bill's pale ale are my personal faves). It was good to try new beers though.
On the final day we went horse riding. I got bitten twice. I fucking hate horses. Skinny legged fuckers. Anyway, my woman loved it. I was shitting my pants. I've never been on a horse. My horse tried to bite my foot so I kicked him in the head. I don't enjoy kicking horses in the head, but if it's that or be bitten then you better believe i'm going to kick some horse. At the start some old Korean guy was taking pictures for us. He told us to hold hands so we did. He then told us to give the "v" sign. Instead we both gave the thumbs up sign. He kept telling us to do the "v" sign but I told him to go *beep* himself, we're a thumbs up couple. After the horse ride I checked the photos and he didn't take the thumbs up photo. What a *beep*! The horse ride was okay but at the end we were galloping and my bollocks kept getting squashed. It was fucking agony. It definitely reduced my chances of being a parent in the future. But my woman had fun so that made it a bit more bearable.
That's about it. Jeju is a good laugh if you go with someone cool. My first trip was years ago with an ex-girlfriend and was rubbish. This trip was top because my woman's a good traveling companion. |

Disclaimer: You NEED an international driver's license to rent one of those. Don't just think you're going to be able to waltz down there and drive off in an ATV.
Jeju is garbage. I've been 3 times. And all 3 times I left saying to myself why did I come here. The so-called "Hawaii of Korea" is nothing more than a crappy Korean island tailored specifically to Korean tastes. And therefore doesn't feel like a vacation but another part of Korea.
"What shall we eat for dinner tonight?"
"Jjajangmyeon?"
"Whoop dee doo"
My advice? Use the money and go to Thailand. Where it actually FEELS like a vacation and you can actually do fun stuff. You don't need an international driver's license. It costs something like $3 a day to rent a scooter all you need is a passport or ID as collateral. The beaches are gorgeous and not the pathetic socalled beaches in Jeju. Cruise along the coastlines of small islands with palm trees and monkeys running around, instead of grouchy ajummas selling gochu peppers and kimbap. And the food is amazing! No jjajangmyeon in sight. |
