Something about that comment intrigues me... are you under the impression some/many westerners come here because they have a thing for Asian girls?

That seems odd to me. In my experience most come here thinking nothing of them, but then suddenly become interested when they're exposed to them and see how much interest they receive from them.

Uh, MANY guys come to Asia for women. That's pretty evident.

I had no idea where the place was. I had to look on the map, and was surprised it was so close to Japan. All I knew was that the Korean War happened in the early 1950's, and that North Korea was communist. Other than that I hadn't a friggin clue about the place. And my university degree is in history. Confused Just shows you how Korea isn't even on the map for most people in the West. I didn't even apply to come here. I used a head hunter service to find me a job in my field back home. They phoned me and said they had a good job for me as a speech writer - in South Korea. I thought she was kidding me, but she was for real. And they needed someone right away. I didn't even have the chance to read up about the place or learn a word of the language. Everything I learned about Korea I learned after arriving here. Cold turkey, baby!

edit.
(note to self: hunt down that %@#& headhunter.)

Yeah, sure, you have the nasty, old European dudes taking sex trips to Thailand, Nam, etc.

And for Korea you have the chubby gyopo guy whose family sends him here to find a wife (not saying all gyopos here fit that bill, but this does seem to be one particular type that abounds here)

But your average, fresh out of college English teacher coming here I'd say doesn't expect much of the women. Let's not forget, for young white guys in the West, Asian women are usually nothing more than wallflowers they ignore.

Now, I'd say they definitely stay here for the women once they realize just how great they are, but that's about it.

Yeah, I didn't go to Korea because of the women, didn't even occur to me at the time. I went because of the free airfare and free housing (I had just graduated from college).

The only things I knew about Korea were: 1. The '88 olympics 2. It made crappy cars (at the time) 3. Had some kick ass bbq.

Looking back at it, I was amazingly ignorant about a place I decided to move to at age 22. First few months were a bit rough, but ended up leaving because of the job, not because of the country.

I always thought Korea was a poor man's Japan.

I came here and turns out I was right. All of the Dokdo, "they never apologized", and lecturing me about why I should hate Japan insecurities really confirmed that. No one in Japan ever mentioned anything about Korea. It's obvious the only people who care about Japan-Korea relations are Koreans.

I assume you're just talking about politics. A number of Japanese enjoy Korean shows.

And I'm sure a number of Japanese enjoy kpop as well.

But the whole "Japan/Korea rivalry" is a battle only one side gives a damn about. The Japanese view Korea as any other country. I didn't run into ONE Japanese that said anything negative about Korea. To be honest I don't think they care. I didn't know about Dokdo in Japan, and no one ever pulled me aside and tried to explain to me why I should hate Korea. Hell, some Japanese friends I met encouraged me to go to Korea as they went there during the World Cup and had nothing but good things to say about it. So I was shocked when I came to Korean from Japan only to find such a huge insecurity from Koreans to boast why Dokdo is theirs and why I should care, why I should hate Japan, etc. Coming from Japan, for me Korea will always be viewed as poor man's Japan, like a little brother throwing temper tantrums because he's not getting enough attention. Japanese have taken the high road by simply not caring and going on with their lives, and it drives the Koreans nuts.
