Have you put a health condition on your Korean public school application and been successful at getting a job? If so, what health condition did you reveal and what program did you apply to?

I have read the numerous threads debating whether to disclose health information on the public school applications so I understand there are a lot of arguments both way. I'm looking for the personal experiences of people who disclosed information on their applications and the results that they had.

Thanks,
Chimonkey

Dear Chimonkey:

I noticed that no one had answered/responded to your question(s).
I would venture to guess that if someone had actually written a health condition on an application in Korea, they would more than likely not be here on this forum, discussing it with the world at large.

The fact is this: More than likely any acknowledgement of a health condition = NO job in Korea, especially at a public school.

However, if one is somehow "discovered" during the mandatory Health Exam upon arrival than that is a another story. The school then has the option to keep you or dismiss you, depending upon the seriousness of it.

For example, one of my acquaintances had a very high(stroke level) blood pressure reading. The doctor recommended a diet, exercise, meds, and a retest 30 days later. He handled his health issue and all was well and good.

I personally have met about six individuals during my extensive time here, who obviously had health issues.

Four of them worked for public schools. I didn't outright ask them, "Did you reveal this on your application." It wasn't my business.

But after lengthy stays in the hospital, their schools were forced to let two go.
Also, A few years back I met a male teacher who had had a heart attack while teaching. He knew all along he had blocked arteries before he came, but of course he didn't say," I have a bad heart, please let me work at your school."

I thought for sure he would have gotten fired, but the principal loved him and so did the students so he was allowed to stay and renewed the contract for yet another year.

Not sure if that helped. But in reality, if you have a condition that is immediately noticeable or would be revealed through blood work, xray, or urine, I would advise you to try to seek employment in another country.

At the end of the day, the choice is yours.

The competition is so stiff right now. If you were an employer, would hire the sick one or the well to perform daily tasks?

Sorry(actually thankful) no truly personal experience here.

Maybe someone else will chime in on this thread.

Thanks for reading.

I have mild high blood pressure, but with medication it is perfect. I'm as healthy as a horse. Momentarily forgetting where I was, I put this information on my application for a public school job with SMOE. The recruiter sent me to the job interview at the other end of Seoul. As I was walking up the steps to the interview the recruiter calls me to say that the interview has been cancelled. I asked them why. She said, "Oh, you wrote on your application form that you have high blood pressure." No job for me with SMOE. Lesson learned, I turned and applied to GEPIK, and kept any and all personal health information to myself. We have enough odds stacked against us in Korea without giving them more reason to discriminate against us. One more thing, when you go for your health check and are asked about your health the answer to every question should be 'no'. 'Have you ever taken medicine for an illness?' No. 'Have you ever been in hospital?' No. 'In your travels, have you ever encountered a healthier food than kimchi?' No.

Keep all personal information close to your chest in Korea. That advice also goes for personal relationships, religion, sexual orientation and how you spend your weekends.

The more information Koreans have about you, the longer the rope they have with which to hang you.

The only way that you're going to fail the physical is if you're outrageously not physically fit. The physical is so quick aside from blood testing, urine testing and parasite testing, I would be surprised if they notice anything at all unusual.

For your Health Check don't include any conditions present or past unless they will obviously find out about them in the physical. This is true with any application.
