Shinhan is the only bank that told me if I opened an account with them I wouldn't be able to withdraw money from the ATM for six months. That was last year. I've been quite happy with KEB, the biggest drawback being the lack of branches and ATMs. I have an account with KB also. No big complaints with them except not being able to do online banking with a mac (possible with KEB).

I've heard good things about KEB too, I've never heard the Shinhan ATM story, the head of foreign banking is a friend of mine (she used to write a column for Groove Magazine) I'll ask her about that

Please do. I was interested in them after hearing about their business and housing loans for visa holders, but never gave them a second look after the terrible branch experience I had.

^^. This was also my experience with them many years ago. BUT, in their defense, they have completely revamped their service for/to foreigners. Last month they were even passing out Credit Credits to foreigners only
during the month promotion. Their facebook page is in English and every branch has an English speaking representative. It's a start.

I still pass by their branch and shutter though. I don't feel so bad now that you've shared your experience. Yep, it used to be SIX months before you could get your OWN money from their bank if you were not KOREAN.

I keep funds in five banks here and two at home. You just never know.

KB seems to be hot or cold when dealing with foreigners. One branch, in Ilsan, has been great to me. Other branches can be just awful. I don't understand why because you would assume that rules are rules and training is the same. My guess is that local managers have too much power and can make up their own rules. Yes, avoid KB.

same thing with Woori Bank, the branch at Noksapyeong Station (in the Yongsan-gu chang) like I said are the worst people i've ever dealt with. go over to the Itaewon branch and the person at the foreign desk was as helpful as can be. Thats the only branch of Woori Bank I've dealt with where the people were at least friendly

I'm just curious as to why the OP "turned in" his expired passport. Everybody I know, including people from a fair number of different countries, has gotten their expired passport back with their new passport.

I had a terrible experience with Shinan too. It was the Ehwa branch and they claimed I had to wait a period of time (can't remember how long) for my bank card. I asked to see the manager and he told me that it was the policy for every bank in Korea. I cancelled the account their and then. I've posted about this on Shinan's fb page but they either ignore it or delete it. And I bet that lying manager still works for Shinhan.
The same day I walked into a KEB branch and had a card within an hour. KEB have been great ever since.
