Okay, so I bought an AnyGate router at Lotte Mart. I've heard that all you have to do is plug it into the LAN port on the wall if that's how you get internet. I live in an officetel, so yes, this is how I get internet.
However, after I connect successfully to the router, when I open up Safari on my Mac I get an error message. How can I get it to work? Below I pasted the message that pops up. I have a MacBook Pro Retina and the AnyGate box says it should work with Macs...

| NO!!!! Haha. This is the first time I have ever had any trouble like this. I'm wondering if it's something to do with the internet that is set up in my apartment. Maybe it isn't even compatible with a router. I have no idea. It is so frustrating! I don't have an ethernet LAN port on my laptop, either since it's a newer Mac. I'll have to find an adapter somewhere. |

Did you get a router or a ADSL/router (you didn't mention the router model or specifics)?
If it is a ADSL/router then it needs to plug into a phone line and not a lan port /network and nothing you can do will make it work for you.
Contact your ISP to get a proper wifi router.

| I bought an AnyGate WN5200Q router. I e-mailed my school director, so hopefully he can send an IT person over to help me out next week sometime. I know the guy who lived here before me had trouble with his internet at first, too, but he didn't try to go wireless. |

That's a java coding error on the start page of the router. I would replace the router with a different model. It probably worked with older java versions but fails with new versions.
If you want to keep going with this one, the first thing I'd do is take the mac somewhere with internet and make sure your java is updated and working well. You can do that check here: http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp
If it still doesn't work, then the guys who did the router front end are ass-hats for using java and double so for not future proofing it. Get a different one, like a new AnyGate model or any Linksys or Apple router. |

an "IT person"??? you need tier 1 support for a laptop that costs U$D1200+ thats supposed to "JUST WORK"?

Not sure what the point or advise is here, but if it's to point out that using a mac in Korea is not the easiest road to take, then I'd agree wholeheartedly. Thank the shortsighted lawmakers for that. Open web standards are 20 years behind here. |

| I will try updating Java first. I am able to get internet from someone around me with an open network, but it is so slow. At least right now I am not totally in the dark. |

I got a Mac for the first time this year. Will never happen again, at least not in Korea. So many issues so far...
As for your problem, I think we had the same one when we got ours (the first of many). We took the router back to the store and they confirmed that it was working. We bought a different model and it worked. That might be the issue.
I have also had issues using certain websites on my Mac here. Pay and banking websites especially, although there are others that don't work as well. I'm far from an expert but had no problem on my PC for the last decade over here so I blame my Mac for this also.. |

| It's a Netgear router. It's worked fine. We got it at Homeplus, but I've seen them at Emart as well. |

Okay, I'll try there. I know there's an E-Mart a bus ride away. I wish I would have just brought mine from the States, but I didn't know I'd need it.
