Quote:
East Asia is the worst affected area with researchers estimating more than a million people dying prematurely every year from PM2.5 pollution and 203,000 from ozone pollution.

India has the second highest air pollution mortality rates with an estimated 397,000 deaths from fine particulates and ozone accounting for, on average, 118,000.

Next comes Southeast Asia which has estimated average of 158,000 deaths from PM2.5 and 33,300 attributed to ozone.

Europe has fractionally less PM2.5 deaths (154,000, on average) and 32,800 premature deaths related to ozone while in North America there were an average of 43,000 deaths from fine particulates and 34,400 related to ozone.

My first year here, the fad was to own one of those electric air cleaners that would capture dirt particles on an electrified plate. I had one. Problem was, they put out alarming amounts of ozone into your home. I caught pneumonia, and I am sure that thing didn't help.

Studies have raised serious health warnings about those things. I was slowly killing myself while I thought I was doing good "cleaning the air."

Ozone is a bad thing.

Maybe far above our heads as the ozone layer, it is a good thing, but breathing it in is bad. (I don't fully understand it.)

Fine particulate matter (dust, soot, smoke and liquid droplets) is classified as less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. It is particularly dangerous to human health because it can lodge deep in the lungs causing cancer and other respiratory disease, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Ground level ozone is created by chemical reactions between oxides of nitrogen and volatile organic compounds (VOC) in the presence of sunlight, say the EPA.

Yes, I should clarify... good up in the atmosphere, but BAD for breathing.

Quote:
How is Ozone Harmful?
The same chemical properties that allow high concentrations of ozone to react with organic material outside the body give it the ability to react with similar organic material that makes up the body, and potentially cause harmful health consequences. When inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs (see - "Ozone and Your Health"). Relatively low amounts can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath, and, throat irritation. Ozone may also worsen chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and compromise the ability of the body to fight respiratory infections. People vary widely in their susceptibility to ozone. Healthy people, as well as those with respiratory difficulty, can experience breathing problems when exposed to ozone. Exercise during exposure to ozone causes a greater amount of ozone to be inhaled, and increases the risk of harmful respiratory effects. Recovery from the harmful effects can occur following short-term exposure to low levels of ozone, but health effects may become more damaging and recovery less certain at higher levels or from longer exposures (US EPA, 1996a, 1996b).

Does Korea have high ozone levels? What causes it (aside from the electric air cleaners)?

Ozone is a natural substance created when oxygen reacts with UV rays or electrical discharge. It's very unstable hence very corrosive.

Korea No.1 (including ozone), you know that. Razz

The anti-smoking people need to take their justifications and put their money where their mouth is and ban all that crap.

Ozone is what they use when somebody dies in their apartment. The room needs to be sealed off to prevent the ozone from escaping.
