I plan to go see the beach next week (on non-holiday days).
I see Haeundae has a train station, but the direct train there is really slow, 6 hours from Seoul.
Another route involves a transfer at Dong Daegu (KTX to slow train) and takes 4.5 hours
Or, I could take KTX direct to Busan and then take the subway (2.5 hours).

The subway to Haeundae is about an hour from Busan station, right?

Does the KTX meet the Busan subway only at Busan Station? Could I get off earlier and avoid going to Busan station and then backtracking?

Is there a better way to Haeundae that I am missing?

Thanks,

If you are going all that way, you should just take a cab from the station IMO. It will take 20 minutes or so and cost around 17,000.

You have a few options...

I would personally do this:

KTX from Seoul to Busan, then hop in cab or the subway to haeundae.

Up until this year (2013) the KTX from Seoul (we took it last summer 2012) also stopped at Gupo station in Busan but I think I read somewhere that this is no longer the case. Gupo is on line 3 and is 17 or 18 stops from Haeundae (one transfer) as opposed to 25-some stops from Busan Station. As a bonus, getting on at Gupo (in our experience) means plenty of seats on the subway.

If the KTX still stops at Gupo I would say that this is a worth while option for you.

Regional trains calling at Haeundae departs from(or terminates at) Bujeon Station, 6.3 kilometers (4 miles) north of Busan Station.

It is simpler for you to take KTX all the way to Busan Station, and then catch 1001 urban rapid bus in front of the KTX station. Should be a 50-min ride to Haeundae Station without heavy traffic. Taking metro doesn't save much time in theory, unless you arrive in Busan during rush-hour.

Good ppint about the rapid bus! I compeltely forgot about it. However, if you catch traffic it will take a hell of a lot longer than 50 mins!
