So, here's kind of a weird question: will my passport photo reflect negatively on me when applying for teaching positions?

I have a beard that is a little unkempt in the photo. It was taken a few years ago before I was seriously looking at teaching overseas.

Unfortunately, appearances do matter to recruiters and employers when hiring. It would probably be a good idea to take some new, more "professional" looking photos (clean-shaven or well-trimmed beard, shirt and tie, etc) and submit those w/ your resume/application.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to do that...I have a photo of me clean shaven and in a suit. But I'm trying to determine where the passport photo fits into the application process. Is it something that is reviewed during the initial phases or just something that's reviewed more as an afterthought as part of the checklist of documentation?

The passport photos/ID photos are needed for various applications and forms in the process. Plus as mentioned above, sometimes the photo is asked for to make a visual and look judgment by recruiters and schools.

I had braids down to my shoulders (I'm not black--I was big into skateboarding in high school) and no one's even mentioned it. You send your CURRENT pic when you apply for jobs, as well as your outdated passport pic. If I can get a pic looking like a hippie it's not a problem so no.

I would suggest purposely blurring the photo on the scan copy. That way they will not be able to see your beard is unkempt and will look for the photo you want them to see. They are not going to see your original until you are in Korea if even then.
