Some education offices are coming up with a provision to ban students from carrying cell phones and a nerve war against the telecommunication industry, which stresses the cell phones crime preventive function, is expected.

A recent surge in the number of student cell phone users is translating into problems like disturbing the atmosphere during class and excessive spending on telecommunication fees.

Some of those phones are expensive for kids.

Why should they be banned? Just turn them off.

Put a sign on the door or check them in at the beginning of the day, but banning them is an invasion of the family's right to raise the child.

A cellphone isn't a human right. Considering what sone of these little darlings get up to at school with them they can leave them at home. The schools have payphones.

No, it is not a human right, but what about the right to property? Shouldn't it be the parents choice if the child has a phone?

Not so easy to control -

before when I used to teach in a Public middle and High school - so many kids were all using their phones under their desks to send messages, play games, take pics - ALONG WITH THOSE DAMN COMIC BOOKS it was so difficult to control -

all I could do to discourage it was grab a phone after sneaking up on a student whilst they were using it during class - and then write all their personal messages up on the whiteboard (in korean) to shame and embarrass the student...

still even that doesn't work too well - they definately need to be banned in class along with comic books

How would the students/parents feel if all the teachers sat behind their desks playing/using their phones instead of teaching??

I agree on banning them in class, just not banning them in school. They should be off and in the bag. If not, then they can be taken and given to the parent, but not kept by the teacher. They are too expensive to be lost and it will only cause problems between the parents and the school.

Nope. During school hours it's loco parentis.

I find it easy to control.

My policies and practices are clear on food, toys and phones:

I see or hear a phone and it goes on top of the T.V. until after class. If they don't turn the sound off as I instruct them after their initial disturbance it goes out the second-floor window.

I've never had to do it fortunately because they believe me. I've thrown marbles and other small toys out before, when they've continued to be a disturbance after I've given a yellow-card warning (I always give them one, and only one, warning).

I've even lightened up the class once when I picked up the most troublesome student and tried to put him out the window. Everyone laughed and that was the end of it. The point was made.

Other teachers have noted that students like to leave their things in the office rather than take them to my class. It sounds overly dramatic and extreme, but it's amazing how problem-free my classes are, after my reputation became established.

Be firm and consistent with whatever rules you set.

It's not just the use of the phone to talk on it in class. At my friend's boys middle school, cell phones were banned after it was found the boys were taking covert under the skirt photos of their hot Japanese teacher and posting them on line. It temporarily wrecked her life.

My girls, the perfect angels that they are, have never used a cell phone in class, but they sure as hell use them during the break!

They're not banned, but if I catch them using their phone in class, I confiscate it. It's mine until after lunch if I find it in the morning, or after school until 3:45 if I get it in the afternoon.

It is their right to possess a phone, just so long as they don't use it during class.
