I bought a US$2000 Tag Heuer watch off Korean Craigslist for US$500.

http://forums.watchuseek.com/f25/tag-heuer-formula-1-stealth-authentic-879038.html

After I got it home and did some close inspection I was extremely impressed with this timepiece, Everything was well thought out, produced and assembled with extreme care and attention to detail. A refreshing relief from most of the junk and low quality objects handled and used in Korea. A Small oasis of old world craftsmanship the I can affix to my wrist.

I have my eye on another one:

This one is seriously boss. It is at the upper end of my spending limit of US$2000 But now I have one and I know I need another. For now.

I have a jules jurgensen gold watch that I love, but the company went out of business in 2010, so I don't wear it often because I don't want to break it, as the panther link is delicate. I wear a gold bulova watch most days. I've got 2 gold and leather watches, but I left those in the states.

I envy people who can wear steel and silver. I'm allergic, so can't wear most styles, and can only wear thin watches because solid gold thick watches cost more than I can afford. Even gold plating rubs off over time, as I learned the hard way. If I could have any watch, it would probably be the cartier tank watch, but it's 20 grand. http://bizspeaking.com/biz/178295010956069847

Good to see the money you've made through tax evasion going on something useful.

swiss - vacheron constantin, jaeger-lecoultre, iwc

german - glashütte, nomos, a. lange & söhne

unfortunately i'm not a member of the financial elite and possess none of those watches so i happily wear my ball moonphase which is the best american-based brand hands down so it's not all too bad.

edit: color me embarassed

I have a couple of IWCs (Aquatimer and Big Ingenieur DFB, both chrono), but want a Big Pilot. Maybe next year.

IWC makes watches called "Portuguese," but the company is owned and based in Switzerland (adding to the confusion, it was initially American-owned and -founded).

Thanks, but the cheap ones are steel. Even a steel version of the one that I want is over 4k. The ones I'd be able to wear are minimum 15k. Sigh...

#1) My Korean-made cell phone. Why wear a watch when I've got my phone in my pocket?

#2) If I gotta wear a watch, then I wear one of my Swiss Army watches (the one I wear most is a Wenger). They look good and they can take a beating (I spend a lot of time outdoors).

love to talk about watches! regardless of the brand, and like all luxury goods, prices seem to have really jumped in the last few years - incredibly, the 2 new g shock aviators i like will cost almost 2 million for the pair - for G shocks! personally, i like certain styles more than a specific brand. Omega has some great watches, and I even like a Heuer, the Monaco. brands like IWC, C.V. and the like are simply to expensive for my working class budget. saying that, i guess the g shock line is the only brand that i like many watches from, especially, the new aviator line - they have amazing functionality, great styling, and are incredibly reliable.

I didnt wear a watch for over 40 years but I felt an immediate need as a first-time teacher in Korea. Classroom clocks were unreliable & careful lesson timing immediately struck me as quite crucial. My first real purchase in Korea was a watch, a plastic digital piece of crap which nevertheless kept me on pace.

About 7 years ago I got invited to lunch at the Blue House by the president at the time, Roh Moo-hyung. Hardly exclusive (there were almost 200 others there) but everyone got a watch with the presidential insignia & his signature on it. Damn its been a nice timepiece. I wear it daily (except during vacation when its the first thing to come off). Not too flash & its comfortable & reliable. It never loses a second off global clocks.

Thats my watch story. No idea of its maker but its a keeper & it was free. Personally I couldnt imagine spending thousands of dollars on a bit of wrist bling, but to each his or her own.

IWC makes some very nice watches as do Omega. But, yes, extremely expensive. I try and buy mint, or near mint, used watches. If I spend over US$1000 I start to think of the other things I could do with that money. But it is nice to admire the precision and workmanship of nice watches. As far as G-Shocks go, I saw some Luminox watches (similar level) for over US$1500. Unreal prices for run-of-the-mill watches.

last year, motivated out of fear as it was about to to be discontinued and was selling out all over korea, i bought my dream watch, the Omega Planet Ocean XL (2500 series)

http://www.google.co.kr/imgres?imgurl=http://forums.watchuseek.com/attachments/f31/413561d1301568038-wtt-omega-planet-ocean-xl-img_0909.jpg&imgrefurl=http://forums.watchuseek.com/f31/wtt-omega-planet-ocean-xl-521391.html&h=1936&w=2592&sz=1681&tbnid=dN6zn4rQwO6MfM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=120&prev=/search%3Fq%3DOmega%2BPlanet%2BOcean%2BXL%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=Omega+Planet+Ocean+XL&usg=__giCybkJJ0JEpSLPO07UFNqo1z3s=&docid=1ZRpz_mQ1SaR7M&sa=X&ei=rMASUua_EInqiAfjloHgDQ&ved=0CDIQ9QEwAg&dur=613

i'm still conflicted over this purchase. i now realize that being able to purchase something this expensive (for me), does not mean i can afford it - i barely wear it as i'm too afraid of damaging it. also. sometimes, the dream is better than the reality. saying that, i find myself dreaming of this little beauty these days:
