I'm living and teaching in Bangkok right now but I want to go and do another year in South Korea without returning to America. Is it possible to do the FBI background check from Thailand for Korea and do you have any suggestions or information about how to do it that could help?

Thank you.

Do it by mail like everyone else who is abroad. There are lots of "how-to" threads. Just look back a few pages.

The only problem is that it is slow. You'll need about 4 months to get everything done and be ready to start applying for jobs.

Yeash... 4 months is a long time. I hear it's just good for 6 months after as well, which is a bummer.

Most of the background check threads start at 2008 and so I worry that the information is out of date on those.

I work close to the US embassy so I'm curious if I could get started on the fingerprints there or if I'd have to print out the fingerprint forms and go to the Thai police station for it and then mail those out.

If anyone from the US has done it from another country and could give me the quick rundown of their experience it would be really appreciated.

That's 6 months from date of issue not 6 months from application.

You should, even by mail, be able to get the apostille done in a few weeks after you get the Check back from the FBI. It is the wait for the FBI check that is the time consuming pain in the azz.

You need to download the forms and instructions.

Read.
Do.
Wait.

When your CBC finally arrives in the mail you then send it back to Washington (sec of state) for the apostille.

Your embassy won't do anything to help you. Get printed at the Thai police HQ.

Do NOT use a channeler. If you do it will be rejected by K-immi and you get to start again.

Google is also your friend: http://www.google.com .

It is possible but you'll have to use FEDEX to do it in any kind of a timely fashion. One thing you need to be careful about is don't use the Thai postal system. I did it once and got my documents back 3 months later. Always use FEDEX. That means you'll have to get a FEDEX account to get it sent back via FEDEX

I'm starting on it this week.

I printed the forms from the site, but also I can go to the US Embassy and get the official forms. I made an appointment for Friday in the morning to grab them (because maybe more official forms are better), and then the following week, I can go into the Thai Police Station and get my fingerprints done there.

I've seen some places where they said I need about 5 copies of the fingerprints? Is this true and what do I need them for?

They require 2 complete sets of fingerprints (two fingerprint cards) for each CBC application.
