Is this common??
"Since this is an ASAP position, she was wondering if you would be able to arrive this weekend and possibly do a visa-run.
As you might know, a lot of starting date for positions are end of August- Early september so the positions are getting filled pretty quickly, especially the ones in Seoul.
Because of this, many teachers are coming to korea and doing a visa-run (teachers arrive in Korea first and make a trip to Korean Consulate in Japan to get your visa)." |

Is it common?
Not as common as it once was but it still happens.
It is NOT usually a good idea. Hagwons have been known to "test" new teachers while they are on their tourist stamps (illegal) and then cut them loose if/when convenient (often before they repay airfare). Makes for cheap staffing with no airfare to worry about.
It is not without risk.
Also, IF you decide to take that risk, make sure that the school will pay for airfare to Korea AND the costs of the visa run. 2 nights in Osaka plus airfare isn't cheap and the days of "same-day-service" for visa processing are long gone.

Thanks for your reply. I'm going to take your advice. I don't want to be put in a bad situation. I told the recruiter that I'm not comfortable coming to Korea without my e2 in place.
Thanks |

For a first-timer to Asia, I would agree. But if you come on a tourist visa there is security in walking away from a bad school. There is risk in losing a school but there is also the risk you are tied to the school. I went to one and left 3 weeks later. The owner didn't even know I didn't sign the contract and said "Sure, we can give you a release letter", "Oh, I don't need one, I never signed a contract and I'll be out of here by Sunday.", "Really? Ok, finish today's classes and come get your final pay."
That was it, by the following Monday I moved into a new apartment and signed a contract with a new school. I taught the following day and got my visa sorted. They paid for the visa run and hotel expenses. |

One positive is you can come and see if they like you or if you like them. Make sure you come with plenty of copies of your Apostilled CBCs and Apostilled diplomas and ample money because Korea is expensive to live in and search for a job. |
