Hi everyone
So I've got a demo class in a public school (it's a private public school) in front of real grade 6s.
Just wondering if anyone has experience with this.
So far, my plan is- a good topic kids like talking about- and a short fast-paced competative team game.
I have topic ideas kids like to talk about or that I've done well before, but wondering, is there expectation of using powerpoint slides. I don't usually teach in a public school so am not sure. Also, would prefer not to a) rely on technology which I possibly don't know how to work, or, b) isn't working.
My ideas are -choose a good topic kids like talking about,
comparitives... .... is ....er than .../ or " " is better than " " or
sometimes/always/never .. These kids are high level grade 6 th graders.
Has anyone done a 10 min demo?
what the heck can you do in 10 mins??? I know they just want to see u speak but should I really do the start of a normal lesson, as these kids don't know me.
any advice. |

Find another school. Never did anything like that for my public schools. |

In the EPIK/GEPIK programs there are public schools, and then there are schools that will hire a native teacher but they are private religious schools and some that were founded by wealthy individuals or boards. Some are very good and others can be hellish, it depends on the usual factors. You don't typically have to join the church to teach at a private religious school but they do tend to prefer more conservative individuals. That's conservative in dress and weekend activities, not necessarily politics. Understand that going in and you'll be fine. |

ahh, well, I've figured out a topic and plan for the demo. Thanks for the answers.
umm, it's not a religious school. It's the elementary connected with seoul national university.
The private public terminology is really just mine.
I know there are some public schools in Seoul that advertise and hire on their own, some r religious, but not all of them are, at least I think.
The elementary connected or beside hongkik university always advertises on its own, and isn't religious. |

Overall, I'd say they are worse of a place to be than regular public schools. Why? Because they want to recruit new students (to get more money). So it is kind of like hagwon mixed with public school. The class sizes there tend to be very large there too (from my experience) and also, kids with low test scores can't go to the normal public schools, so they go to the private public schools. Low test scores is indicative of not caring about school much (and/or maybe they are just not very bright) which means the behavior of many students will probably be pretty bad. It sucks teaching students like that. I thought I was going into a normal public school, but then after I signed the contract (with the ministry of education) and started I found out it was not a normal school. >_< Too late at that point (and I believe I was deliberately deceived). |
