Steelrails - sure, many cab drivers are hard working individuals.

But I regularly travel between Gimpo Airport and Bucheon, and the taxi drivers regularly refuse to take me or demand DOUBLE what it costs. When I ask them to use the meter (which is the LAW), they refuse. A Seoul taxi tells me he won't go to Bucheon and I should take the Gyeonggi taxi. The Gyeonggi taxi says HE won't go to Bucheon and that I must take the Seoul taxi as I am only about 500 meters outside of the Seoul limits in Bucheon. Then they tell me if I pay them 25k, they'll take me. All of this while the police officer is standing around watching them BREAK THE LAW and F every tourist that comes out of the terminal.

The fact that the government refuses to lift a finger to enforce the laws (like running the meters and taking a passenger - you know, the BASICS OF BEING A GODDAMN CAB DRIVER) or to crack down on these shady SOBs, I have zero tolerance or acceptance of raising rates.

While most people have one or two bad experiences, 90% of my experiences with cab drivers are total crap, and that is solely because I use cabs at Gimpo airport and yeongjongdo - an island where cabs are hard to find, so they stick it in and break it off at every available opportunity.

The government created this mess - too many hack licenses - and they continue to compound it. Higher rates means less use means more complaining about low wages means higher rates means less use means...

If you travel regularly between 2 places and have that much grief with the taxi drivers, perhaps you should buy a car.

Yeah, Korean cab drivers can be assholes. No question about it. But I can't believe some of you guys are complaining about a minimum fare rise to 3000 won. Korea's the only place where I even regularly take a taxi. I never take a taxi back home, too bloody expensive. Japan, forget about it. An extra 600 won isn't going to break anyone. If it bothers people so much just deduct it from your usual tip. I'm assuming Westerners tip taxi drivers here. Unless he's an absolute dick I always do. I'm sure plenty of you do too, so just deduct 600 won from the tip...or decide not to tip at all.

I can't believe we're all getting bothered by a 3000 won taxi trip.

I don't tip taxi drivers here. Anyone that does is a moron. When you tip taxi drivers, they then start to EXPECT it when the next Westerner gets in the cab. Don't tip taxi drivers outside of Korea, Americans!

What an idiot. Tipping Korean taxi confuses them and not to mention what the other idiot said (ipayincash) they will start to expect it from Westerners. Stop tipping Korean taxi drivers you atheist fool.

I wonder who pays for the speeding tickets drivers get when they drive like a bullet from a gun at 2am. lol.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Taxi service in Seoul is already terrible and it's near impossible to find a taxi in certain areas or at certain times. They need to fix the issues with the system and with the taxi drivers refusing to drive and choosing their customers or demanding ridiculously high cash prices before they increase their rates.

It's not paying more that is the fly in the ointment here so much as it is the lack of any enforcement of rules regarding the bad taxi drivers, who abuse the system by not picking up passengers, and try to negotiate higher fares at certain times. The higher fares and pay should also mean better service. We shall see, but don't knock those who have legitimate doubts.

The claim by the government that higher base fares will take care of those problems, (see the original article), seems very naive and not in touch with how things really go out there in Seoul. A higher salary may help to keep an honest person on the up and up, but it won't make an honest man out of a dishonest one. Like I said before on this thread, if the fare and salary increases go through and some taxi drivers are out there still refusing to pick up passengers, then the city will be forced to crackdown on those bad taxi drivers.
