Pretty typical in most countries where universal health care and/or proof of insurance/ability to pay is not available or an option ... not letting him leave the hospital or country till his bill is paid.
This isn't the UK, Canada or Oklahoma (where all but the county hospital would have refused to treat him in the first place).

In the US he would have a huge malpractice lawsuit. The Korean doctors grossly misdiagnosed. They should just let him go out of shame for their terrible medical skills. Antidepressants? Really? |

This is full of it. In the US, all hospitals have to provide treatment if the patient is in danger of losing his life or being permanently maimed or is in pain by Act of Congress. In general large public hospitals are likely to be Level IV hospitals and are just as well equipped as private hospitals, when it comes to trauma they are better equipped |

I wasn't passing judgement on the Korean hospital. I copied the title of the article and pasted it into the subject line.
My real purpose was to raise awareness. This wouldn't be the first EFL teacher in Korea to have to raise money due to a hospital stay, but this seems rather tragic. Hopefully a few will contribute. |

The thing is that he had insurance when he was admitted.
This is yet another reason why we all need to get supplemental, non-workplace-based health insurance. |

They dump patients or refuse entry all the time (regular occurrence in Phoenix during the 10 years when I was working there).
I don't imagine Oklahoma is any different.

Further info would be appreciated. I'm kinda thinking about that and all...
Sucks for the dude, He certainly didn't do anything wrong and they should transfer him first and sort out the bills second. |

If there was ever a time to donate a little money, this would be it. |

I went with Cigna's global expat plan. They have different levels of coverage, ranging from only in-patient coverage (also includes out-patient care for cancer) to full benefits including dental and vision. There are also different deductible options. I went for the in-patient (and out-patient cancer) care with a reasonable deductible. I like that the customer service is in English, and I'm covered in every country in the world except for the US. My husband is covered in the same countries, though is only covered for up to 90 days in the UK, because after that he wouldn't be an expat. He has national healthcare there, anyway. |

This is why you shouldn't lie on your health check. |

Um... he lied??? I must have missed that.
I'm wondering why they don't just walk out of the hospital with him. Head to Incheon, and fly the frak home. |
