The big topic at my uni now is Masters. The office says that they don't know if people without masters are getting rehired until the Education Board (govt) tells them. Anyone have any insight on what the new government rulings are likely to be or when they will be coming?

First I heard of it recently, but I know an awful lot of people who are going to be screwed if this becomes a nationwide thing.

But, there have been rumors of this change for years and nothing has happened yet.

With that said, if you don't have a masters and plan on staying at a university long term, get one. It's the wise thing to do and, given your job, you have no excuse not to.

I'm hoping I get grandfathered in as I have several years experience.

I should get a masters but I really only want one more year so I can get the online grad cert I want to transition into a different career outside Korea. A masters in TESL is kind of useless for me therefore, and I don't want a masters in another field as yet.

Do any of these these "on-line" Masters programs in Linguistics, etc., require you to write the GRE before being accepted into the program?

Will they give you a big pay raise to match that education requirement? I wouldn't take on all that "Master's" debt just to make a big whopping 2.0 Mil. Seems the costs don't equal the means. But, then again, there's a sucker born every minute.

..unless, there's a really cheap online Master's from a degree mill that will be accepted here. Otherwise, they can go %&*&*( themselves.

Our department head said 2015-16. But when we pushed him for more information he didn't know much. So I don't really think he knows.
I'm sure if/when it happens it will be a last minute announcement.

Speaking from experience: If you are smart and find a low cost masters with flexibility...you can greatly improve your quality of life from a PS (or Hokwon) to UNI. It's not for lazy people though - it takes energy/time/initiative.

So YES a masters is VERY worth it!

Youd be a fool to get a Masters now to teach in Korea. Uni gigs are a shell of their former selves. They pay teachers in peanuts and the vacation isnt what it used to be. I make more than uni teachers now and I work less and have less qualifications. If youre going to spend all of that money on a masters get it in a field you can actually pursue a career from in your home country
Theyre just too much money and time to work a slight step above walking tape players at Wonderland (which make more than you too).
In the good days I cann see the argument. But with todays lowball offers? Hell no. Ignore all of the "all my friends are making 3.0+ in Seoul!!" clowns on Daves
