This industry is degenerating slowly but surely; more and more jobs offer lower and lower pay, and more and more greasy Canadians willing to take 'em. lol, just kidding I love Canadians. Seriously I have been around the block and I can still find the sweet jobs but it is a lot tougher, a lot tougher! I feel a bit sad when I think back to the early to mid 2000's. We have almost the same (or shrinking pay) yet taxi rates have tripled and everything else has doubled in price. Sad indeed.

what's sad about it? You are a dime a dozen English teacher and they know you were a loser (maybe you were maybe you weren't, but to Koreans you are) who couldn't find a job in your home country so came here to work. They will exploit you, short change you, then kick you to curb. And if you try to make a career out of ESL you deserve every last bit of it.

All ESL should be is getting your feet wet and making enough money to pay off student loans or for a quick 1 or 2 year experience, unless you get trapped by a Korean and get married. I was shot gunned married so I had no choice, only my wife was holding the shot gun--not her father.

250k and talking to Obama on a weekly basis? That's more than a 4 star general makes.

Laughing

Yeah, wages seem to be lowering every few months although there are still some nicely paid jobs floating about but you usually need to be lucky or have connections.

Saw one yesterday that was 10-3.30 M-F for 1.0m won. Wonder if it was filled.

If not, it soon will be. Some guy here working on a Tourist Visa will nab it up.

Some will say the tourist visa workers aren't really having a negative impact on salaries and jobs, but there are too many of these guys around for it not to be. A lot of schools hire 2 1/2 workers instead of 3. And it's 1 guy less showing up on the accounting books.

I'm glad fezmond was being facetious (assuming he was?) because I work 11-3:30 MWF, do essentially nothing for the first two hours, and get paid almost 3x more than that. Move it back an hour for my TTh schedule, but it's same shit. 2.3 plus housing isn't much, but with that kind of free time, I can make a decent chunk of change on the side. Not quite as good of a gig as the fabricating guy who pays in cash makes, but, ehh, I enjoy it. I've known a few guys who worked under the table but I would never hate on them for doing what they did. I have little to zero interest in the ESL market in Korea as a lifestyle or career choice. If this English speaking make me money then I'm speaking English til' I'm paid. Wink Joking, I'll be out of this racket soon.

2.3? Yikes... theres no way Id live in this country for that peanuts salary. I guess its your first year though since thats how much first year teachers get paid. Also you cant make money on the side because its illegal and a violation of your visa unless youre a gyopo (and in that case youre REALLY getting lowballed on an Fvisa Laughing )

Look,

Just examine esl pay in Japan or even at home. THAT is where esl in Korea is going. Even for real TESOL professionals pay/benefits is nowhere near what it was in the 80s early 90s. Just ask an old timer about the 'good ole days.'

Heck, berlitz workers in Japan were paid 300,000 yen a month, plus flights, annual raises and living allowance for only teaching 4.5 hours a day with no splits in the 80s. Dont forget the 6 weeks vacation. Think a hagwon teacher will get that now? Hah!

More people will do it. Employers will demand more and pay less. Korea is heading in that direction. i have no reason to believe that Korea is special. Even in the ME where people would teach 5 years in the 80s and buy 2 flats outright at home, conditions are deteriorating. Why? More MA TESOLs and it is not letting up. Employers know they can pay less because that is all the profession is worth.

It's not just the saturated market. I work for an afterschool program where teachers used to make 60 grand a year, teaching students who planned to go to university abroad. Over the past few years the program has become a shadow of its former self. The number of parents that are willing or able to send their kids abroad is shrinking. The government is putting more and more restrictions on certain after school programs with the misguided intent of narrowing the gap between smart and dumb students. Our hourly rate hasn't changed, but the number of hours is half of what we used to get, and the number of students has been halved as well. The school is hoping that the current president will lift some of the restrictions, but who knows what will happen in the next few years.

Maybe I worded my post wrong, who knows.

I was being serious about the shit job paying 1.0 for 10-3.30. I just found the rate of 9,000ish an hour mind-boggling, especially as they want an F-2 only.

Pfft. I do make money on the side, and good money at that, and work around 12 hours a week. What is it that you do again? From what I recall, you used to be broke and lived in a goshiwon, you enjoy video games, post on Dave's seemingly all day everyday, and live what most people here tend to believe is a highly fictionalized social and professional life. Put up or shut up.

Wow... someone is very insecure about their lowball salary Laughing

Discussing illegal activity is a violation of the TOS. Follow the rules.

OMG I was broke when I came to Korea! Uh.... so was every other teacher I met in Korea that didnt come from money and paid their own way through school.

OMG I play games on my phone on the train! So does every other Korean on the train. What of it?

You seem to know a lot about me. Another stalker following me around relentlessly jotting info into his head with every one of my posts. Im inside your head bro. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Over 250 posts in one month largely full of fictionalized jackassery, some things are going to stick. So, again... what is it that you do here? You can't even give out the general field of your fake occupation?
