I would say most of the animosity comes from Ontario within Canada. Lots of history passed down from generation to generation going back to the war of 1812. They seem to be the most anti American. Many people on the east coast go to the states more commonly than they go to the rest of Canada. Western Canada has often had a fractious relationship with Ottawa and have strong trade and business relationships south of the border. |
Wow, that's funny.
From my experience, it's Ontario who is most supportive of the USA, and, most similar to the USA. (Serisouly, who the hell would be holding animosity for a war that happened 200 years ago?) Don't we interact with each other the most when it comes to business, trade, commerce, sports, film/tv, tourism, and politics? I always thought the Niagara and Windsor area border crossings were the busiest between the two countries. Maybe I'm wrong?
It's always seemed to me that the Maritimers were the biggest haters of the USA. They're the most non-American of us Canuckles and always seem to have the most criticism and outright nastiness directed to the Yanks. A Blue American (Democrat) and a Red Ontarian (Liberal) could be identical to each other.
Not saying I'm right and you're wrong. Just saying how it's funny how different our opinions are. |

Ive been treated worse by Canadians than any other country's people and that includes Koreans. Once got thrown out of a Canadian barfor being an American only for one of the owners to let me back inside (he had dual citizenship).
Ive never been tossed out of any bars in Korea for being an American. |

As a Calgarian, I always felt closer to BC, Sask, and The US than I ever did Ottawa (much less Quebec)

There's a thread on that other forum where Canadians say how upset they are when people mistake them for being American. They made it seem as if it was the worst insult ever. |

Seeing as there's only one Canadian bar, I call total BS on that story. I used to go there often with my American friends and there were no problems. None. In fact, we were all friends with the owner. I know several Americans who play on their baseball team. I know an a group of Americans who just went there for dinner two nights ago. Besides, how would they even know you're American? Did you wear your cowboy costume? |

Exactly. If someone called me a Canadian Id just tell them I was from the US. Wouldnt offend me one bit. I have no problem with Canada, despite being treated terribly by them. I know they all dont hate America. |

See, this is exactly what I meant by the Canada bashing echo chamber that goes on here. One guy says some random thing, another one quotes him to "prove" his point.
For the record, this is the OP on that other thread:
"Why does almost every Korean person ask me if I am an American? Is it possibly a stereotype that all foreigners are from a certain country, or that all British people like Manchester United, or that all South Africans live in huts!"
(and then a link to a funny video about stereotypes about all foreigners in Korea)
So, actually, that thread was about Korean stereotypes about ALL foreigners, not a Canadian complaining about Americans. Actually, if you bothered to read down about 7 posts, you'd learn that the OP is apparently South African. And if you read the entire 6 pages, you'd find exactly zero posts with people (Canadians among them) complaining about Americans.
But why let facts get in the way of a good 'ol hate-party. It's good that you have no problems with Canadians though... |

I think Koreans just have little man syndrome. Similar to so many Canadians that needlessly bash America because America is much more famous than Canada and Canada gets less attention globally. |
You obviously didn't get the memo but Canada (read: most of the world) has a bone to pick with the US because the US have been invading, leveling and appropriating resources of other countries for decades now. Never mind what they are doing to their own citizens as of late...
Nothing to do with attention, has everything to do with misery and death. |

So by your logic these people are judging Americans by their passport and not their character. But you still haven't convinced me because the majority of people I've met care more about pop culture than politics. I'm willing to wager most people I've met would recognize Psy before they did Ban Ki Moon. If you're hanging out with a bunch of geo political arm-chair experts at Starbucks every weekend good for you. I'm still sticking with the insecurity angle though.
You have however made people who hate citizens of certain countries because of their government out to be even more stupid. So uh.... congratulations I guess. |

Yeah, I can see that.
I think most Ontarians still don't really care much about the West. That's of course changing a bit in the past few years with your oil and your party ruling (once Trudeau and his pot smoking take power back, we'll be ignoring the West again!) By in large, I think we still have the perspective of we're the important place, the Maritimes is kinda kitchy/cool/cute/loveable in that Irish/Celtic sorta way that makes them stand out, Quebec is the only interesting part of Canada, and then there's the wheat and oil people out West. We have a lot more in common with people from Michigan, Illinois, New York State etc than those wheat and oil people. |

As I said, and wasn't responded to, there's really only one Canadian bar in Seoul. We all know what it is. I've offered a rebuttal, albeit anecdotal, to this story, but haven't heard back yet. Just like I offered sound factual proof against his and another poster's claims that there is another thread of Canadians bashing Americans. And, again, yet to hear back.
PGHB and Mr B joining forces. My god, are we recreating the plot to X-Men 2? |
