Hi! Im new to all this esl teaching but I already found a recruiter. Im on the second step with Educaiton De America but am kind of nervous about signing things after all the horror stories Ive read on the net! I feel if Im informed then the less chance of my being taken advantage of financially or legally. I am researching but would lot to hear any other thoughts.
Has anyone worked with Education De America, heard anything of them good or bad, or have any information of their reputation in USA or Korea. I want to be well represented, but I also have little experience teaching, although lots of experience with children. Teaching comes natural to me and I know I can do this, I just want to do it right. So, also, is it really even that tough to get a teaching job in Korea with little or no qualifications? Yes, I have my BA.
Thanx. ~Noel |

I heard of them and worked through them my first year in Korea. They put me in Mokpo after telling me it was only an hour away from Seoul. Which it is. By plane. I wasn't too upset about that, and they did put me in a pretty good hagwan at the time with a really good director.
I have heard that others have had a bad time with them though. |

With that sentance I doubt you will be well represented by a recruiter, especially if you are still sitting in your home country. You will get the standard and either you will get lucky or you won't with recruiters which has been covered in depth on here.
Saying all that, good luck but I have my doubts after reading the recruiters name. What part of French/Korea/America do they come from???? |

Thank you both for your comments and ideas. just because, ru saying that because i have little experience I wont be well represented? My resume looks great and I played up any teaching I do have. I have several years experience working with children. Thats half the battle.
Education De America is based in LA, CA. Heres their free plug from me http://www.teacheslabroad.com/ |

It's best to assume with a recruiter that you won't be well represented until proven otherwise. IMO, experience and qualifications don't mean much when it comes to how recruiters behave.
It's important to understand the relationship between recruiters, teachers, and schools. Since the schools are the ones that pay, they are the recruiter's client. That makes you the commodity. For a recruiter, their interests come first (naturally), then the school's, then yours. Once they get paid, it's unlikely you'll hear from them again.
If you want to be well represented, you have to represent yourself. Here's a pretty good list of questions to ask the other foriegn teachers at the school. If the recruiter or school baulks at your questions, cut off contact with them. They're just wasting your time.
Good luck |

Thats exactly what i was getting at, sitting in your own home country you can't represent yourself well.
Basically the majority(not all) of recruiters don't give 2 hoots what you have done, they just match a picture with an available job and recieve the green money.
You have a much better chance coming over here and representing yourself ( a daunting task if it is your first overseas experience) but it might make the difference between a great year and a wasted year. |

Thanx again for the help, but I need the free airfare deal to actually get over there in the first place I guess Ill just have to find a recruiter that actually seems to care about me a bit, instead of their paycheck. Im still with Education De America, but they make me kinda scared because when I asked questions she skirted around issues etc. Also, their website has about zero information either about them or about teaching English abroad. Hrmm.. want me uninformed or something?
I went to the efl-law website as recommended somewhere and found a recruiter about 180 degrees different than EDA. Tons of info and even their own set regulations. The World English Service Ltd.... all they want is a better picture of me and onward we go!
Its so funny that a picture plays in 50% to Directors.
I had so many dreams last night about different places I might be landing in Korea, but I dont think any of my tropical places dreams are gonna be a reality. Nonetheless ... this is so exciting! |

I'm also new to the arena of ESL. This site has been a big help but I sent in an application for a school via Julice's Korean Jobs today then read several rants about how they're crooked. A few people admire Julice. I don't know. My feeling now is to sell everything I own of value and fly to Korea with resume in hand instead of going through a recruiter. |

I think you should go back and reread my earlier post.
Look, the best you can hope for with a recruiter is that they won't out and out lie to you. You won't find one that will actually care about you or your situation, once they've been paid (usually between 1 and 3 months). It's in their best interests for them to seem like they care, but that's just spin.
Having said that, they can be useful, if you use them right. |
