You poor poor people. 10 years ago it was consistently $2300-$2400.
Now it's $1898 while the cost of living has gone up considerably since then.
Glad I got out when I did. Got paroled. Left the heart of darkness |
Well, it was $2200 to $2300, several years ago when I got here. Almost $1900 is better than the $1700 on average it has been the last few years. Anyways, let's hope it goes back up. I don't expect it to go back to those historical highs (though one can always hope), but reaching parity would be nice. IE 2 Mil equaling 2000 bucks.
I like to think of it as being a mini pay raise. It's why I still have loans when my bretheren who had the good luck to get here even 3 years earlier got out of debt much quicker. Anyhow, the next couple of years should be sweet if the won gets back up there. |

You ever consider moving to Northern China and doing IELTS? Mind numbing repetitive soulless work that it is aside, you average $3400 a month doing nothing. Tax free. Only working around 13 or 14 days a month. Having lived in Korea and done the hagwon thing, this blows that out of the water by about a factor of 100.
This August I made $6120, but that's our busiest month of the year.
Think about it. |

Yes, I am intrigued. Thanks for the info.
On a positive Korean note today:
2,000,000.00 KRW = 1,912.75 CAD |

10 years ago? No. Definitely not. Maybe nearly 17 years ago, when it was about 750 won to the Canadian dollar. |

I did previously have some long term foriegners tell me the exchange was about this in the early 2000's and partially fell in 2004 to 2005ish, but was still a good amount until the end of 2007 to early 2009ish, when it really fell. Still, considering, it has averaged around 1700 to 1750 bucks for the last few years, this is a dramatic improvement. Won and Dollar may reach parity or even be worth more by the end of the year at this pace. Who knows, maybe 2 Million could be 2100 or more. Let's hope anyhow. If you send home 1.5 Million every month, this rising won even at levels today equals an extra 5400 bucks more over two years paid against your debts. |

I was there man. I pulled some random day in 2004:

$2333 on March 5, 2004.
And in 2005:

$2463 on June 5, 2005. |

You darn well know X-rates does not reflect the rates you get a Korean banks when you exchange won to dollars. |

No wonder those guys could actually pay of their student loans rather quickly. Damn!! Friends of mine who got here 3 or 4 years earlier have been all paid off for quite some time. Let's hope there's a partial return. I think I got the 2200 to 2300 hundred range when I first got here. But a year later it reacher parity and then another year after that, it sunk to 1700 and stayed there mostly (with slight fluctuations) until earlier this year. Well, let's hope by the end of the year, it's back up over 2000 at least.
Yeah a couple of years later after having been here for several months, it was down slightly but not to the degree it would be later on.

This chart shows it now being back to where it was at the very end of 2008 (which still isn't saying much). Wish 2007 (or even earlier) could have been seen on this chart, you newbies would get a real picture of what it was really like.
