I need some help. I have applied for my E-2 Visa and have a school who is waiting for me in Icheon, though I believe they may have canceled my contract. However, the Korean Consulate is putting my visa application on hold because the representative there is stating I need to renounce my Korean citizenship, because I am adopted from Korea. She is also demanding I get a copy of the family register in Korea. However, representatives at my adoption agency have clearly stated I renounced my citizenship as a child through the agency, and that the law clearly states that. I faxed a letter from the agency to the consulate, but they are still standing their ground. My recruiter is also finding this to be ridiculous, and says he has never had this problem with adoptees before. It feels like I have no one else to turn to who may understand the situation that I am in. Do you know what I could do to remedy this situation? This has always been a dream of mine that I wished to pursue.

There is an adoptees' organization called GOAL. Maybe they can help you. In any case, there's info on their site about how to obtain an F-4 visa, which is a much better visa than E-2, which will allow you to work more freely, with fewer restrictions. Good luck, hope you can get it straightened out pretty soon.

Asking for you to produce your Korean family registry? It's easier said than done for an adoptee and, quite frankly, the request is terribly insensitive. Good luck.

Are you male?

They may want you to join the army.

Not kidding.

Yes, also something to consider. Good point.
