I came across this on facebook: http://www.filmsforaction.org/news/8_reasons_young_americans_dont_fight_back_how_the_us_crushed_youth_resistance/

I found it interesting though a little disturbing. Some of the ideas like the affects of student loans and what they call the normalizing of surveillance are particularly interesting.

Any thoughts...

Debt is a terrible thing. As far as poverty goes, youd have to be desperate to move to action. It makes people over-cautious, for sure.

Thanks a lot for posting Happiness and Steelrails.

Steelrails,

I would think except for maybe the 3rd one, all of those were true in the past. Don't you think? For me, the question is what is the difference?

Now, Happiness mentioned the stifling nature of debt. That might be the case. But, a lot of people in the 18th century arrived here as indentured servants but many just ran away and even had uprisings. I guess it should not be a surprise that we are different today. I was just curious what people thought were the reasons.

I thought the point about how parents monitor their children quite interesting. And that has lead to a decrease in independence and more acceptance of monitoring by others interesting. Any thoughts about that?

Yes, American youth would be so much better off if they were like British youth, NZ youth, or Canadian youth, who have to leave their country in droves to find work.
