| All I know is that Korea does a better job across the board, for the rank and file than we have in the US. I hear a lot of pros and cons on Canada'a health care system, but have no personal knowledge. In the US, most health care programs involve the boss sayin' "You get sick, you're fired!" unless you work for somone too big to scrape along under the radar of the law. |

I'd be getting a supplemental policy if we weren't going home in 3 months, We'll take our chances for now
However this is a good point for all the newbies to get a supplemental policy or if its discovered you've been IC'ed to enroll in NHIC. I just met a guy down at my local coffee place who told me he was working for CDI and wants to run with my club, asked him if he had NHIC, said "no" told him to enroll before coming out with us. |
Telling someone to get health insurance or you won't hang out with them?
If I was that guy the first thing I would have thought as I walked away from you is "what a tool." |

But that isn't what he said...was it?
It was obviously a condensed version of the actual conversation, which in keeping with this thread, was a damned decent thing to say.
Hey...you want to run with us...great. But it is a good idea to get supplementary health before you do.
Not so toolish...but your take on it sure does seem to be.
Maybe it's easy to misinterpret someones post to take a shot at them.
I'm sure we all do it from time to time.
No worries.
As for me...having to get the extra insurance would be a great excuse not to join the club.

Aside for the wait times for non-life-threatening conditions, and I guess costs to the government, I'd say there is very little downside to Canada's health care system. It's much better than the US alternative. |

I respond when asked and offered the info to new teachers in Korea when the chance came up. So, perhaps I did word things unclearly.
Still, at the end of the day, it is a person does remain responsible for his or her choices. That is not a blame or putting fault on someone or an "I told you so"; it is just how life works out.
So please get supp medical insurance if you intend to work or travel abroad. In Korea-centric terms, please do so because the health coverage you get from work will not be enough to cover serious illness or injury. If you do not do so,. you are really playing a dangerous game with your health (personal and financial). |

I disagree with that. If you miss work a lot for concerns that seem frivolous you might get replaced unless you can explain they're not frivolous. If you're a temp worker they can get rid of you at the drop of a pin, but that's a much larger concern than just health care. |

I'm leaving Korea shortly, but I just wanted to chime in that there is a lot of interesting info being put out in this thread regarding health insurance.
I just wanna recommend a similar thread be made a sticky educating expats about Korea's health insurance and options for supplimenting it.
But only as a thread of facts, info and first-hand experiences, not a forum for debate.
Cheers~! |

| I ended up having to pay over 2 million won for 5 days in the hospital when my appendix was removed. Granted, a few hundred thousand of that was for the upgraded, 2-person room (there was no way I was staying in a room with 4 or 5 other people and their families), but it was a lot out of pocket. It was less than it would have been in the states, but that's not really a good country for comparisons, because the healthcare system there (pricewise) is fecked beyond belief. |
How much of the cost was for the surgery and how much of it was for the room?
I had my appendectomy done at a specialized gastroenterology clinic in Gangnam and it cost 109,000 for the initial consultation and the ultrasound that identified the appendicitis. After that, it was around 485,000 for the surgery, meds, meals, etc.
NHIC covered the entire cost of staying in the general ward. I preferred to stay there anyway, feeling safer with other people around at all times. I had a lot of fun in the ward, actually. |
