So I ask my students, why is SNU the best?
No one knew. |

Why is any one university anywhere in the world considered better than another? There's a whole laundry list of criteria that are used in ranking tertiary institutions, such as faculty publishing/fame, accomplishments of alumni, endowment, acceptance/graduation/alumni employment rate, accreditation, cultural significance, etc. You also need to look at what body is giving the "official" rank. In reality, it's often a PR issue. A university becomes renowned over a period of time, for multiple reasons, and it becomes lodged in the collective conscious. Take a look at the university rankings in Korea to see where they come from and if there is a list of qualifications. Then, talk to your students about that information. Everybody learns, everybody wins. |

Better yet, check how these universities rank in the world, then notice the names of some of the ones from your own country that are better ranked (good schools, but nothing that would make you waste your childhood in order to ensure that they'd accept your application). |

Who are your students anyway? Are they university graduates? or are they high school juniors, at least? Mothers with children at uni? Most people just know that Seoul is best because they've been sold on the idea. If you want your students to discuss, debate, demonstrate, deride then they need data, ideas, and so on. What do I see here? You asked a vague question and got a vague answer. What's your point? |

The basic idea is that SNU is the Korean Government's flagship university - the one they founded and support. It is supposed to attract the best students in Korea and have the best faculty.
Of course, these days KAIST is probably ahead of SNU in terms of science. But, it is the same thing. KAIST is a Korean Government project. |

Seoul National is the S in SKY. The other two, Korea University and Yonsei, are private. They're older, they're in Seoul, they're well funded. |

Just don't let someone put the foolish notion into your head that a top univ. means a top-paying waygook teaching job. There may be the few unique Ph.D exceptions in specific departments, but for English teachers, these schools often suck. |

Seoul National University was built by the Japanese and named Keijo Imperial University - Keijo being the Japanese name for Seoul.
It was part of the Teikoku Daigaku sytstem of imperial university that included - Todai (tokyo daigaku), Handai (Osaka University), Kyudai (kyushu daigaku), and several others.
National Taiwan University was also part of the teikoku universities.
You can still see the Japanese style built entrance gates to the campuses and many of the older Japanese built buildings still exist. |
