I have always found the American levis to be of poorer quality than the Canadian ones. The Canadian ones are thicker denim as with the Korean ones. The American ones are made in Mexico, whereas the Canadian ones are made in Asia somewhere. The thinner ones wearing out more quickly. But, there's no disputing the American ones are really cheap. In Canada, you're looking at about 80 bucks for a pair nowadays. But those same pair in Korea are 160,000 won. I think I have seen some cheaper. (Maybe some places have started selling the American ones here? But still not as cheap as the states.)

I've noticed it's usually Americans that find prices in Korea 'shocking'. It's like you Americans enjoy prices that would give a peasant market in Lagos a run for it's money. I think Korean prices for clothes aren't that bad.

last pair of levi's 501's i bought in canada(about 4 yrs ago) were made in mexico. they were cheap, in price, but quite good in quality. in the past 4 yrs, ive bought 3 more pairs in/through korea. one was in a levi's store, and the quality was nearly as good as the mexican made cdn purchase, but the price was 2.5x higher. second was from the internet, and those were made in china...price was low(almost as low as canada), but the quality was VERY poor. 3rd pair was bought on the internet, and cant remember now, but think they were made in malaysia...price was same as chinese made pair, but quality was nearly as good as both bought in korea and canada. my personal exp anyway. levi's are definitely much more expensive here than back home.

i bought levis at lotte department store in dogok-dong (green tab) and the levis store in myeongdong (engineered). it was around 2006 or 2007, and i paid 220,000 won and 180,000 won, respectively. the prices were equal to what i would have paid in the us. i was lucky to find them here because they actually had my size (22 w x 30 l).

as for the classic 501s, they seemed to go for around us$30 at "lower-end" stores like kohls and jc penny. cant comment on the quality because ive never worn 501s.

I wasn't aware there was a difference in 501's. That might explain why a pair of 501's in Hyundai Dept cost 186,000, while I just bought 6 pairs in Canada for $200 (OK, one pair was from a used clothing store).

I tell you what was a real treat for me; having a friend who works as a manager for a major sports store chain give me his discount. I purchased over $1,500 of stuff for $400. That almost blew my Scottish brain apart.
