My search abilities seem to be sub-par because I haven't been able to find any information in this forum related to my quandary.

I am looking to teach in Korea and bring my husband along (not a teacher) as a dependent. The first recruiter I talked to gave me the impression that finding housing for the two of us would be an issue (deals only with public schools). But from various blogs and forum posts I've read, it doesn't seem all that uncommon for a teacher's flat to have a queen-sized bed. That's really the issue. A studio flat is fine (that's what we have now), we just need a bed for two. Is it really an issue to bring a dependent, or is the recruiter just not wanting to work with me for some other reason and using this as an excuse?

No issue, just bring him along and get him registered as an F3 dependent when you plan on being here. The recruiter is blowing smoke because the public school can and will make accommodations for people with spouses. They do it all the time, so if you are not satisfied with the recruiter just find another one, there are more than enough to go around, and all have a different line to feed people with. As for the bed, no problem, the school will make all the necessary plans for housing you and your spouse, including finding you a suitable bed if needed.

Thanks for the reassurance. That was our thought on the matter, so we'll just find someone more willing to work with us.

Just be pro-active own your part. The rules do allow for spouses to accompany their working partner. Remember, that not everyone is going to work for you since for a portion of the recruiters doing this work, and I have to clarify that not all recruiters are out to take advantage of people, but there is a portion that feel you are nothing more than a pay check to them. So, they are not going to do any more for you than they would for any other person who puts their trust in the recruiting agency they represent.

With that said, be sure that you just make it known that your spouse will be coming with you, and tell them the accommodations will have to be for a "married couple". This is important because most contracts use the term "married couple" in the housing portion of the contract. Couples are granted different types of housing than single individuals in some cases, so it does make a difference. The recruiter you are trying to work with knows this, and this is why I think something shady might be going on with this particular person and/or agency.

Housing will be the same (regardless of what you read in your contract about "spousal housing").

Find a job and leave the dependent out of it.

Come over (with your spouse) and after you get your ARC your spouse can change their status from tourist to F3.

If the bed is too small, get a 2nd one or get a bigger one.
