Z man I'm proud you are famed on the net but... You hath neglected the very rare category of persons- ahhh absolved that I should say Sons of gods. There is One Grand Noble Lord appointed by God through the Divine Right of Kings to RULE COREA in Goodly English Might. The Noble Baron of Toad Hall and Righteous Victorious and Unflappable Gentlemen of redoubtable fortitude, and matchless intellect who in pity and ever loving mercy, chooses to train his lesser English speakers in the way of the greatest language ever made.
He does not tarry in the Land of the Han to pursue maids, or devour corn covered go-go-ma pizzas. He sallys forth on his Destier bringing fear, awe and irritation, but no car may crush him as God forbids this. Yet he is here to spread his Love and Kindness to all the common folk who toil in the rice fields to feed him. Love of his blahh blahhhh yongo yongoo blahhh blahhh. There is not a pig farmers' daughter he will refuse to greet nor is there a dirty footed butcher's boy he will not patiently correct in his perfect English. All Coreans bow before him and pay him due homage for his Grace, Benevolence, and steadfast toleration of their needy English skills.
Churlish drunken westerners fear his disdain and instantly cease their puking and brawling when he pauses in the clubs to admonish them and demand they return to their studios and prepare thoughtful fun English games.
ESL teacher girls curtsy before him and offer him chocolates and apologies for dressing inappropriately in sleeveless shirts. Whenever he visits Corean Zoos on field trips his place in the Hierarchy of thee world is clear as all the orangutan cease their howling and cover themselves with leaves flat on the ground in obsolescence to his sovereignty as King of the Monkeys. |

I do say sir, I highly resent this comment. I spent all night formulating that list. This list was aired on the Tonight show with David Letterman. Many man hours were spent researching this.
For you to imply trolling is mere conjecture.
I stand by my list.

I googled my user name and what would you know...my Korean discussion posts came up. When I googled my real name NADA. So because of the millions who have been exposed to this post, I have decided to resurrect it for the good of those who may not have seen it.

8. Loves Korea so much and posts about it on Daves
7. Six months later posts again about how much he/she hates Korea and is never coming back
6. Leaves Korea and gets a real job and realizes that working an actual 40 hours a week sucks
5. Posts on Daves how he/she is desperate to come back to Korea
4. Has been smoking pot so posts again on Daves about how to beat the test
3. Comes to Korea and immediately finds other westerners to hang out with/makes no attempts to meet any Korean friends
2. Continuously makes plans to study Korean and after two years only knows five words other than food words.
1. And the number one characteristic of the typical Englishee teacher:
Blogs about cultural differences and becomes the resident expert on Korean culture although he/she only hangs out with western people and only eats at western restaurants. His/her biggest preoccupation is wondering when the new Taco Bell is going to open in Itaewon.
Sound familiar anyone? |
That can apply to some degree in some cases, in terms of the categories, you mentioned to people teaching ESL/EFL in many parts of the world, wouldn't you agree? I had worked as a teacher in the US. I got out. I had, actually, wanted to go to Korea before that not because I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life because I thought it would be an interesting adventure because experiencing another culture and country is an adventure that can enrich your life. I can relate to loving Korea for the first six months. I learned a little more Korean than what you described. I would have liked to learn more, then, but there were no classes in my area, the books were horrible back in 2006. They're decent now.
I wasn't desperate to come back to Korea, but I was interested somewhat in coming back with the right offer since I would be returning with an M.A. I did apply to the UAE and other places. I would have gone to the UAE over Korea, but Korea is a good choice in many ways.
I am not an expert on Korea, but some folks act like they know so much. What I do know is from tons of reading about the country, living here, asking Koreans questions, observing the people. I definitely need to eat more Korean food. I eat a ton of it, but I pretty much eat the same dishes. I can't say, this time around, I eat more Western dishes. The food in Jeolla-namdo doesn't make me sick as the food in the North did. I don't know what the restaurants up north add to their food, but it maybe avoid Korean food and the same for a friend from New York. I didn't avoid it completely, then. I like the food more than before. |

Has it opened yet? |
Does that mean I'm not typical because almost everything on the list applied to me? I'm confused. |

Dave's ESL, how I've missed your posts!
There are people here are here to teach because they like it... they're here because the economy in back home might be so bad, they're not able to do what they wanted to do and ended up still doing something they like abroad.
Generalizations against foreigners living here are just as bad as the stereotypes people give Koreans when they first come here.
Ignorance is ignorance. |

| I figure most people move abroad to have a job, or a better than crappy one. Turns out it is a learning experience too. |
