|
|
Herald Media Inc. has signed a formal contract with the Seoul Metropolitan Government to manage Experience English Village, an English immersion campus due to open October in Pungnap-dong, southeastern Seoul.
The village will include buildings with imitation banks, airlines and a post office so students can practice dealing with native speakers in situations which come up frequently during a regular day and pick up useful expressions and words. At village museums and pavilions, students will learn the history of English-speaking countries. Students will be able to stay in accommodations set up to imitate living areas in English-speaking communities. They can hold barbecue parties on lawns in front of houses in the village, and there will be outdoor cafes and fruit shops.

Sounds like a damn amusement park to me.
There's something being built similar to that in Ansan I believe by some people associated with Kyonggi province.
Anyway, that would be a cool place to work.

Korean primary and middle school students will communicate with each other only in English at the village. Native English speakers with TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificates will be chosen as teachers to help young pupils improve their English communication skills. U.S. soldiers in Korea can work as volunteers in the community |
I doubt if the TESOL will be manditory.

I was actually part of a team that was in the competition for the bidding for the English immersion camp. Our team didn't get it obviously....The overall idea seemed to be a pretty good one. We were going to have all kinds of sets where kids can practice and learn how to use English in different situations. There was going to be a travel desk, banking, English book cafe (that was my part) and several other things. The place where they are going to have it, is an impressive set of buildings. I just have a weird feeling that some side stuff was going on because of what I have heard about the Herald program, ours was going to be very similar. In fact, we had it budgeted out so it was going to be 66% cheaper than what the Herald is going to charge the students.
From what I saw I it a great idea. I am sure the business side of English education is going to screw it up some how. Also, our team had it budgeted so that the foreign teachers were going to get paid between 3-4 million a month. |

My thinking too. Who gets to teach in the "7-eleven" room? Who gets to teach in the "airport" room?
Will have to wait to see it in action before totally condemning it - immersion is 100 bazillion times better than the hogwon classroom for learning and retaining English.
But, they're going to fly in a bunch of English people to pretend to work at a pretend bank? I wonder how that would pay, compared to actually working at one? Maybe you get paid in pretend money. |

How many middle school students go to the airport on a regular day.
I wonder if the teachers will be working 24 hours per day. Who will be teaching the night shifts and taking care of the kids when they sleep? maybe bilingual ajumas? |
