Well, I kind of figured something might happen when I crunched the student numbers and my hours this semester at my after school job. Worked with the company over a year, just got my 30 days notice and, eh, I don't really mind, ready to move on. Questions:
1) The guy who runs the company is a dumbshit and my tax rate is 3.3%, contract says "employee". Could I get anything out of it by going to the MOE or labor board? Could I accomplish anything by doing that?
2) Never received a warning letter or anything, but the company C-word lady conveniently showed up with three of them from earlier this year, which of course I never received or signed. She was hesitant to show them to me because she knew I'd call her stupid ass out for printing them out this morning. Basically, this dude isn't making any money and half of what is being paid out is going to me. They're keeping my CT here for the rest of the year, but I'm being made the scape goat so this guy can pocket my November and December salary. Those fake warning letters aren't legit if I don't sign them, right? Do they factor into this at all?
3) Long overdue question. How the hell do I move $20k +? The exchange rate has been dropping a little but I never needed to send money home so I'm trying to figure out the best option. I know I'm gonna lose a bit because of the exchange rate, but the currency exchange places in Itaewon give better rates than the banks, right? I know you can't legally roll out of the country with over $10k... but can you? Is it worth it? Little here, little there...?
I think I'm going to Mexico for a while to brush this slope off of me, and I don't reckon that's a good place to stroll into with $25k, but at least there are branches of US bank accounts I have located there. Though, I figure that might cause even bigger problems, right? Just trying to game plan.
Let me know if you have any input about the job/money situation. I wouldn't mind hanging around a little longer to stick it to the owner of that company and I could live with my girlfriend, but I'm not sure if I could accomplish anything. Any helpful input? Worth it to go after the after school company? |

1) file your taxes and get your refund.
2) Nope. Not with 30 days notice. You won't win anything.
3) You can roll out with as much as you want but you need to file some paperwork if you have more than US$10k in your pockets/baggage.
Just wire it. It is a flat rate and the loss on the exchange rate isn't that high compared to the convenience of it.

Or PatrickGHBusan. Whom OP apparently has gotten into it a few times on this board with, when the reality is OP makes 2.3, breaks the law by doing privates, and is now out of a job.
What goes around comes around I guess. Hopefully OP learns a good lesson by all of this. |

Didn't take long...
Thanks for the kind words, Lucas. I was kind of hoping it would pan out until the end of the semester but I've expressed on here before that I was ready to get out of here soon anyway, so it's really not a big deal to me more than it is a minor inconvenience, really. I got the boss whom I've only ever seen once to up the severance I didn't even know I would be receiving after threatening him after work so, like I said, I'm pretty content with the situation.
There's no lesson to be learned, I have no regrets and come this time next month, I'll be happily sipping margaritas on the beach in Mexico while goshiwon boy will be desperately trying to get around his inevitable IP ban to spam this board with more stories about his fictional job and nonexistent girlfriend. |

Jobs. Something that I still have, and you apparently were unable to hold. Your next go in Korea (because we both know youll be back this time next month), try upping your credentials and improving your teaching skills, this way you can increase your ability to hold a teaching position. Here at my company part of my job is to provide feedback to struggling teachers. Ive been part of a lot of success stories so if youre willing to put in the work you too can become a very successful teacher. |

Stop trolling my thread dude. This situation had nothing to do with me. The AS company owner is an idiot and made a contract with a small school that was never going to get as many students as he wanted, which is why I only had 2-3 classes a day. They're bringing in a cheap Korean English teacher so the owner can at least profit a little before the program shuts down in December. Don't worry about me dude, there is a zero chance I will ever return here and I'll be in grad school this time next year. Not interested in ever teaching again. I'm amazed you released some information about this job of yours, though. Bravo. |

Worked with the company over a year |
So, what exactly is the issue? You are combining too many things. Exchanging money is an issue for people who still work with the same company too.
Looks like you had a good time, and now you are somehow surprised you have to make a change.
You don't have to go to Mexico, unless that is really what you want. You can always get a new school. You can easily transfer your money to your bank account back home, visit a bank in your near future. |

No, I did combine things but I don't think you read what I wrote correctly. I did work for the same AS company for over a year at two different schools, got the 30 day notice at this one today since the school is simply too small to get enough students in order for the company to profit, and now I'm going to Mexico so I asked about how to get my money out without losing too much of it. I'm obviously aware that I can transfer money back home from one of my four bank accounts but I'm interested in the most cost effective way of doing that.
I wasn't really surprised by anything. I'm going to Mexico because I want to go to Mexico and I'm from Texas so it'll just be a little vacation before heading home. I have no interest in working in Korea anymore. My director said she'd give me a good reference but I'm not even going to look.
Despite the ease of the job I'm losing, I feel pretty relieved to leave this country. I mainly stayed here because I kept getting handed cake after school jobs with really low hours, and it allowed me the time to realize that not going to law school was a good decision. I have other interests and opportunities back home, not sweating this too much. |

Thank you, sir. Good luck with everything. I was kind of thinking about going out with a ban-ensuring, curse filled bang against Dave Sperling, though. |
