Is the term "redneck" derogatory? Lotteria doesn't think so.

I was in a Lotteria recently and noticed displays trying to capitalize on the U.S.'s western culture to sell burgers.

The term "redneck" appears in displays which I thought was considered offensive and used as an insult.

What's your take?

Here's text from a display (and yes, this is how it appears in the store).

Yeah it is. In fairness, I don't think they have a clue what redneck means since they are calling them "redneck biker sliders."

Don't even bother getting upset with the bad English here. Of course the corporations can afford a proper translator, but they prefer to use terrible English for anything from signs to the name of apartment complexes for one very simple reason: it offers all the benefits (appearing more international, mainly) without being threatening to the average consumer. There has been at least one study about this (can't recall the name of the article), but that's essentially what the linguist concluded.

At a John McCain rally in 2008 Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild called some demographics 'rednecks'. Those were the people whom Obama had just called 'bitter'. She didn't speak at McCain events after that. So, in Britain OK, in US not OK.

On the same vein, is White-White a derogatory term?

Nah, i don't think 'redneck' is a derogatory term. Jeff Foxworthy made his entire career off that term..

Now, if they used the term , ' wet-back' , that'd be a different story.

I'm a little bit of a redneck and I use the word sometimes, so I'm not offended. Actually, I don't think many Koreans are aware of what the word even means. I tried my best but failed to explain the meaning to a Korean girlfriend in the USA who had lived in the Deep South for nearly a decade when she asked what the word meant after I muttered "f-cking rednecks" after some 'necks made a comment about us.

True rednecks tend to wear the name with pride. I come from redneck Alberta and know personally lots of guys who call themselves rednecks. We don't have a lot to talk about.

Of course it can be used in a derogatory way too.
