Look, I'm not saying I enjoy being around airheads who go and on about food, but its not strange. I just think people talk about food and comment on it around the dinner table much more than they realize.
It goes back to the phenomenon of minority-majority perceptions. When a minority does something strange, its because of their culture. When someone in the majority does something strange, its because that that individual is strange. Also, the majority is incredibly ignorant as to how they are perceived by the minority. They also tend not to remember their own standard practices as these are routine and forgettable. Dinner at a restaurant with some friends back home might not produce memorable conversation about the food. Dinner with a bunch of people from other cultures and certain things stick out, even though it mirrors your own experiences. |

So you're saying we all go on about how delicious food is, only we don't realize it? |

Who even knows what that windbag is going on about anymore. I always enjoy it when said windbag uses the "we" thing when talking about expats doing things that match his ideas or made up experience, yet isn't part of that crowd when it doesn't...ie the incessant belittling of NSETs. |

There was an event today which may solidify the notion of how obsessed and arrogant people are about the local "cuisine". Garnered a legit LOL from my non Korean, Asian wife at least.
Bonus - Nice job ripping off the name of a well known novel to promote a specific cultural event.
DATE: Tuesday 17 September 2013
TIME: 1:00 - 3:00 PM
COST: No participation fee
VENUE: Seoul Global Culture and Tourism Center, 5th Fl M-Plaza, Myeong-dong 2-ga, Jung-gu, Seoul
DESCRIPTION: The Korean Food Foundation presents ‘Eat, Play, Love’, a story-telling competition where Korean contestants share heartwarming stories of how Korean Food has healed their mind and body. The event may be filmed and posted on YouTube and the organisers are inviting members of the international community to attend and to taste traditional Korean foods, like Japchae [Glass Noodles with Sauteed Vegetables], that the Korean storytellers hold dear to their hearts. |

YES. It is such innocuous drivel small-talk when it happens at a restaurant that you don't even register it. Usually because around it are more interesting conversations which your brain retains, and the fact that your body and mind are reacting to consuming the food. |
