Why would a nation of people who empty their nostrils on the street and park their cars on the sidewalk be offended by the term 'redneck'? They be a nation of rednecks. Confused

Let's leave the French out of this.

Nah, i don't think 'redneck' is a derogatory term. Jeff Foxworthy made his entire career off that term..

Now, if they used the term , ' wet-back' , that'd be a different story.

I'm not upset by Lotteria's use of the word, but comedians often make their careers from offensive, derogatory words, like the very famous Chris Rock routine involves the use of a certain word that begins with the letter "n".

Those people are absolute idiots. They'd probably protest if a woman of Iroquois ethnity won the pageant - not 'American' enough.Confused And the woman was Ms. New York, as if a white person would be more representative of that city. Still, she was chosen as Ms. America, and that's progress. A black president and an Indian-American as Ms. America. Who cares? Only rednecks could be bothered by this. People with names like O'Reilly, Libovitch and Bernstein complaining that 'newcomers' are taking over America. Confused

But here in Korea, how long before a K-pop group even considers having a non-Korean member in any of their groups? How long before even a half-Korean will be allowed in one of their beauty contests? If a Vietnamese woman (Christ, if she was even one-fifth Vietnamese) won a Korean beauty contest it wouldn't just be rednecks protesting, it would be the entire nation. It would be brought up in parliament and there'd be street protests. There are idiots back home, but there are also millions of progressive, open-minded people too. That Korea lacks. Korea can beat America at the 'redneck' game any day of the week.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasmine_B._Lee

Ms. Lee was a television personality on Korean television and now is an elected politician. And she is not of Korean heritage...although she is now a naturalized Korean due to her marriage to one.

Quote:
Jasmine Lee (born Jasmine Bacurnay y Villanueva) is a Filipino-born Korean, television personality, actress and civil servant. Elected as a proportional representative in South Korea’s National Assembly in 2012, she is the first non-ethnic Korean and naturalized Korean to become a lawmaker.[1]

No street protests as of yet.

^ That's old news. And how did the Korean netizens respond to this? Besides we were talking about the Korean equivalent of Ms. America, not a lone ethic minority in a national assembly of 200. Easily ignored, easily made ineffective. But for many, a 'Miss ______" (insert country) stands for the country, however stupid you and I might think that is. How do you think Koreans would react if Ms. Lee had, instead of being elected to the assembly, been selected as Ms. Korea? The nation would have had an aneurism. As I say, they're not even ready for an ethnic minority, citizen or otherwise, in their K-pop groups.

Lots of kpop groups have non-Koreans. One group was basically comprised of half-white half Korean members. My friend was marketing for a boy band that had Japanese and Chinese members. God why do I know this much about kpop

Scorpion, can you just admit that you massively failed with these statements-

Quick List of prominent groups:

f(x) (Two members are Chinese!)
Miss A (Again, two members)
2PM (NickKhun)
Super Junior (Zhou Mi, Henry Lau)
Busker Busker

Yeah, clearly having foreign members has been a massive drag on the popularity of those no-name groups I listed above. Rolling Eyes

As for this....

Quote:
If a Vietnamese woman (Christ, if she was even one-fifth Vietnamese) won a Korean beauty contest it wouldn't just be rednecks protesting, it would be the entire nation. It would be brought up in parliament and there'd be street protests.

Plenty of K-Pop groups have non-Korean members. And sorry, Korean people would not riot in the streets over Miss Korea. They don't riot over losing to Japan in soccer. Why would they riot over Miss Korea?

yeah scorpion, i know you're a devoted korean basher but your statement about kpop stars couldn't be further from the truth and using that to defend 'murica isn't going to work as SR pointed out. in fact, Nichkhun of 2pm is a great example of koreans openly accepting non-koreans in their kpop groups. he's argueably the most popular member of 2pm and is of thai-chinese descent and doesn't hold a korean passport. not a drop of korean blood in that one...

An Indian Ms. America is not progress. The abolition of Ms. America would be progress (specifically, progress away from inanity). An Indian Ms. America is just tokenism and a chance to say, "Look at how much we've changed! Look at how much we love diversity (meaning of course diversity of skin tone, never diversity of thought)! But as you can see, we've still much more work to do/much further to go/much more progress to make/etc."

Not to mention a few celebrities that are ethnic Chinese born in Korea who were singers in that 80's-90's area. They are called 'Hwagyo' for those who are unaware. And there are more around than you realize, most foreigners wouldn't realize if they had one in their class, but the student sure know. Also a few half-black singers out there.
