Can somebody please advise me on the pitfalls (if there are any) of owning a US region Xbox in Korea? Is it difficult/impossible to get games? Are there any issues with online play?
Thanks in advance.. |

There will be lots of games you can buy and play here. If I were you, I'd check the back of the box, or maybe even bring your 360 in to verify the game works before buying - alot of the gameshops, esp the ones that sell 2nd-hand games, will let you return the game if it doesn't work. In my opinion, it's better to have a us/can ntsc 360 anyway. Without, you can't play NHL. Even if you can't buy nhl here, you can through play-asia or somewhere similar. Don't care too much about live, but you may have an issue with servers if you're using an american/cdn account(although I'm not 100% sure of that). Seems like most PS3 people I know tend to have at least two PSN accounts. |

Thanks for the reply.
What's the situation with a power converter? I've had different things from different people. Will I need to get a converter or a 220v power brick from yongsan? |

Either would be fine. With my current US one, I'm using a brick I got here. Whatever you do, do NOT plug your 100-127v one directly into the wall with only a plug adapter. |

How much did you pay for the brick? |

Not sure, but think I used the one from one of my NTSC-J ones that RRODded a long time ago. I wouldn't pay more than 30,000 if I were you because you can get a step-down transformer and plug adapter for less than that.
New, this site is showing 64 and 54 for fat and slim..

I was quoted 45,000 for one; needless to say I am still using my converter. Will buy a Korean brick soon though, if anyone has a spare for a slim.
Regarding regions, your only concern will be voltage. But PS3 owners also have issues with DLC. Ps3 games are rarely region locked but the dlc can be... |

If I get a Korean version, will I have issues with the language of the games? I'm basically only getting a 360 to play FIFA 14 and GTA V, will they be in Korean if I get a Korean system? |

90% time no. Very few games are actually translated into Korea, and the ones that do just have subtitles or Korean menus as an option. It's one reason why console gaming has kinda gone nowhere here |

True. Some games will offer a manual in Korean for the locals too, so don't be surprised if there isn't an English one. I'm really looking forward to GTA5 as well. Sometimes, the game you most desire is the one you can't find in Korea, or the version is NOT playable on your console due to region locks. Just a warning. Yes, you can get it elsewhere, but you likely won't be able to play it on release day like some of your pals back home. |

As far as I can tell, the one available for pre-order on Play Asia has no region lock? http://www.play-asia.com/grand-theft-auto-v-comes-with-atomic-blimp-dlc-paOS-13-49-en-70-4vab.html |

That one should be fine. It's just that you mentioned getting an NTSC-J console here. I, personally, wouldn't do that. Unlike others, I have had some problems with region and language issues and some games just not being available like, as I said earlier, NHL, except for NHL 07.
edit! hah, looks like this year's NHL might actually be region-free. guess they do that every lucky 7 years or something? |

I have a US 360, I tend to buy most of my games on eBay from Hong Kong (Region Free). |

I bought a US 360 while I was in Korea and had no problems with it.
You REALLY have to research your games first before you buy them though. Play-Asia is nice and sometimes I use it as a resource site for whether or not I should buy a store game... but if you mess up on the region lock issue, of course you're not going to get a refund. It's safer to buy from Play-Asia, or if you go to Songtan, there's a little shopping area outside the Osan AFB gate that deals with a lot of Americans including a "GameStop" (may or may not be affiliated with the company) that sells US versions of games.
As to the language issue, I really haven't seen it as a major problem outside of about 3% or so of games. While I hadn't hit any on the Xbox, I did end up getting the PS3 games Quantum of Solace, God of War III and Final Fantasy XIII in non English (I think only GoW3 was Korean though), and on PC, The Movies (although when I downloaded an American version and used my legally bought in Korea serial, it worked just fine) , all of Blizzard's modern titles (note that Korean World of Warcraft DOES NOT connect whatsoever with American WoW).
One major issue is the PC "Always Online" games such as Diablo III and the new Sim City. Those are Korean only. (At least, so I've heard on the latter.)
Other than that, the only other problem I had with my 360 is that when I bought it (used, but only barely) the power brick didn't work and I had to get a new one from Microsoft Korea. It's been fine otherwise.
But if region lock is really an issue that concerns you, you're best off going with a PS3... some games MIGHT be in Korean or Japanese... but no region lock. |
