Sorry, but any Western professor would raise the same concerns as I regarding the "claims" about noise, heating and so on relating to creativity. What research have you done in regards to noise levels and behavior into bronze/iron age Korea? What data do you have regarding heating in feudal Korea?
In fact only a "Korean" professor would fail to ask such obvious and basic questions about those assumptions.
Face it, his post was a fail of academic and critical thinking. |

Do you think that the ideas that were enshrined in the American constitution were thought up in a day on July 4th? Are you that delusional? Are you that ignorant of American history? They were imported (largely) from Britain and developed over generations. They definitely were not thought up "in a hot room of men screaming" one summer's day in 1776.

Sometimes the lack of peace and quiet in Korea frustrates me. I was taking a walk in my local park today, enjoying the sound of children playing and parents having fun, when the shop at the corner of the park started playing K-pop really loudly. I don't mind shops playing music inside their own premises but why the *beep* do they put speakers outside their shop and blast music?
They also do it at my uni at lunchtime. 12pm hits and they start blaring shitty pop music. Sometimes I'm still trying to teach a class.
I wouldn't mind so much if it was relaxing classical music, but it's not. |

There is plenty of peace and quiet in Korea. Maybe it's hard to find in Seoul, but up here in Gangwon-do, it abounds. I can walk up a path right behind my apartment and be nearly certain I will neither see not here anyone. Both my favorite park and my favorite coffee shop are usually empty (though the shop plays soft classical music, so it's not silent), and if I take a stroll with the kids between some of the nearby old-style houses, the only noise I am likely to hear is made by them, barring perhaps an occasional murmured compliment.
It's not that there's no peace and quiet in Korea, it's that the highly westernized segments of the country are densely populated and cater to noise-tolerant demographics, so you have to make something of a choice. |

I'm not claiming there is no peace and quiet in Korea. I'm claiming there is a lack of peace and quiet in Korea that frustrates me.
I went to Jeju and stayed at a pension in the middle of nowhere. For some reason the owners of the pension had speakers outside their office/coffee shop which played music for most of the day.
I don't understand why they would feel the need to do that. |

Because they like to have music playing?
Most restaurants and coffee shops will play some kind of background music. Here or back home. That's why there are radio stations back home called "Coffeehouse" or some such. |

Okay. But why have speakers outside the restaurant/coffee shop/convenience store etc? |

I have an Angelinus cafe near my apartment and there is no room for the patrons to sit outside (it sits on a fairly busy 4-way junction,, yet they still have speakers outside blaring music.
I too have no idea why they do this. |

I would think it's because Korean business owners believe that their Korean patrons (or, potential patrons) are attracted to the noisy, upbeat, "must-be-happening-because-it's-super-loud" music.
Like mosquitoes circling in on a campsite at dusk.
Simple lack of consideration and nuance, again. |

The same reason the Abercrombie and Fitch store back home has music playing or the Mexican restaurant has generic mariachi music pumped out.
To attract customers and to project a certain vibe.
Or you can just believe that Koreans are stupid and ignore the fact that similar gimmicks happen elsewhere. |
