I've been reading about the mass shooting at the D.C. Navy Yard. It is really some crazy stuff.
What is the chance that something like this could happen in South Korea? I know that owning a gun is outlawed in Korea. But, what about our military bases located throughout the country. Could a deranged soldier get his hands on a M16 and cause mayhem? If this were to happen I pray to god that i am not living and working in Korea.

Ah. Thanks for the link. The NRA might say that if people were armed then this would have never have happened. |

Well, at least he had a good reason for what he did. Most in such cases have no reason at all. |

A mass shooting can happen in any country at any given time. Even Scandinavia. I mean S.America? Easy. Africa? Easy. SE Asia? Easy. China? Easy. Russia? Easy. South Asia? Easy. Middle East? Count the days since the last one. Europe? Rare, but has been known to happen. Japan? Likewise, though more of a chance of culty gas attacks and/or acts of radiation and nature. Canada? Exploding rail cars. Even great Scandinavia. |

I've killed women and children. I've killed everything that walks or crawls at one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you done to Ned. |

There was a military draftee who shot a bunch of his bunkmates, near the DMZ, a few years back. Does that count as a mass killing?
I've been told by real old Korean teachers, that they've heard of rumors of guys going wacko in other units, but it never made the news. They served back in the 60's and 70's, so it was much easier for covering things up. |

ROKA uses K2, not M16 but never mind that. Now you know that mass shootings happen in Korea and USA, where will you go instead and pray? Why would a shooting happening in an area 200km by 300km worry you? Consider Syria, where a civil war has killed an estimated 100,000. For 99% of the population, a gun battle is something that's reported to happen not something they've been caught in the middle of. Sure, many have had relatives killed, but facing an actual danger is only a remote possibility for an average Syrian.

K2 is standard issue. Some units still use the M16A1. No idea where he got the idea the ROKA uses the M4.
Mass shootings occasionally occur in the ROK military. Shootings sometimes even occur with civilians using hunting weapons. Sometimes some crazy guy goes around and starts stabbing people. |

I am tempted to say that if there were more guns in Korea, then there would be more shooting sprees. The crushing conformist culture and all its expectations combined with a perpetually-inebriated populous with hair-trigger tempers has all the right/wrong ingredients.
However, there are not that many incidences of people going postal in Korea, so they must be doing something right. |

Meh, it's not just the lack of guns in Korea, it's also the lack of built up anger with no outlet.
Living in Amerika makes you want to kill people, see the movie Falling Down, that's exactly what happens.
I don't think Koreans want to kill people, they just drink soju and enjoy life. |

I'd say any country that has the same access to guns as Americans do would definitely see a rise in shootings. Question is if it would surpass the American rate. Koreans are extremely emotional, and access to guns would make Korea a much more dangerous country. The very old people you see hunched around fought against their own brothers 60 years ago. |

Round these parts, people who are in dire straits and/or mentally ill tend to kill themselves before starting shooting sprees. |
