I'm wondering if anyone here has full time corporate teaching experience at a large Korean company. Just curious what your experience was like.

Im talking about large chaebols that employ native speakers full time (9-5) to train their management/engineering staff.

I'm interested in hearing about all aspects of the position:
-pay
-working environment
-housing
-vacation
-weekly teaching hours
-general job satisfaction

I was offered full time work at a large company, although not a chaebol, but what they offered me full time was pretty much the same as what I was making there part time. When I pointed this out to them they said I could use the company vacation housing as a bonus. Which prompted me to ask if I would receive the same bonuses as the Korean employees (12 months extra a year). Of course this was laughed at. So basically, they wanted me to work 20 hours more a week for no real increase in pay. Guess whether I took the job or not.

So you mean Korean employees at that company get a bonus equal to their yearly salary, basically doubling their annual pay?

When did this company go out business with such a "generous" pay package for its employees...I mean doubling payroll through bonuses is a rare thing in corporate land... Wink

Last week in an adult discussion class an old fella was trying to tell me that it's common for your yearly bonus to be at about 75% of your gross salary. I thought it sounded ridiculous.
But then I was in town talking to some Korean guys around my age and I was shocked how low their salaries were. They explained that most medium sized companies pay bonuses anywhere between 50-80% of yearly salary on top. Sounds like a strange system.

Yep. It's common for some of the big company salary workers to get 25 million to 50 million won for a yearly bonus.

I used to teach Business English and, I too, was shocked at their monthly wages.But then when they told me, they get a big bonus at the the end ,it balances out. This is an interesting system.

Sorry, I just assumed the bonus system was common knowledge. The companies pay the bonuses 3-4 times a year. SK, Samsung and Hyundai actually pay even more in bonuses. A factory worker at Hyndai now makes close to 6 figures when all the perks are factored in, and yet they strike all the time. As to the op's questions, for an e2 it maybe a good deal, but not so great for an f visa holder. Personally, I'd rather take the high hourly wage (60-100/hour) than a package. Now that I think about it, most company jobs are unavailable to e-2's.

I am aware of the bonus system but I just assumed what you wrote was an honest mistake.

Then again, some companies hand out what appear to be very generous bonues but offer abysmally low base pay in exchange.

Still, the bonus system can lead to excellent pay for employees, provided the company does well and investors are happy....
