After living in and traveling in Asia for more than 10 years I have found distinctions between the cultures.

Japan is known for politeness, Thailand known for the land of smiles and the list goes on. What are Koreans known for?

And I don't mean Math & Science.... but as a people.

When you look at these counties regarding GDP, household income and socioeconomic level, Korea is down at the bottom. The way they drive, how they treat people they don't know, Koreans lack a level of civility when you look at development and economic progress.

Of course you go to Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam etc where their household incomes are low, they will try to extract as much money as possible they can from the gullible tourist.

But I look at their mannerism and actions walking on the street.... Koreans are the low. These third world Asian countries are not screaming about their seasons, diet and healthy food. That shows insecurity.

This is an insight.... not necessarily a discussion... just my thoughts.

One poster recently testified that Korea turned her into a fat divorcee who cried on a weekly basis. That should be the basis of a new PR slogan for Korea. "Korea: you just can't handle it princess, so stay home."

Their slogan is closer to 'Work makes money' which is what any capitalist country subscribes to.

I was in Manila not so long ago (and have been there too many times), and have to say... I think the OP is wrong. Driving in Manila is just as bad, if not worse, than Seoul. And then you can add the nasty amounts of jeepney exhaust to it. I like their "Global" areas (Bennafacio and Makati), and think those beat out Gangnam and Apkgu here, but the "less than nice areas" are not paces I enjoyed walking around.

Not to feed the troll but...I had a couple of interesting experiences before I came to Korea back in 97.

I had never been to Korea before and to be honest I really didn't know anything about Korea before setting foot here.

Anyway, I had signed a contract and I was given a plane ticket over. I had to leave from Chicago but I wasn't from there and one of my parent's friends put me up. I had dinner with them. My parent's friend's brother was some hotshot stock broker guy and he asked me what I was doing and I said I was going over to Korea to teach English and his response was, "Be careful, I have never met a Korean who didn't lie to me." And, I was like, come on, how can you say that about an entire country? Well, it did not take me long to understand once I got here, at least in the hakwon business world of the 1990s.

Also, just before leaving for Korea for the first time, I met my brother who was going to graduate school at the time. His roommates where Thai grad students who never wanted to graduate so they didn't have to leave the U.S. and go back to Thailand.

Anyway, they asked me what I was up to and I said I was going to Korea and they were like, "Great idea! Korea has the most beautiful women in Asia!" And, I was like really? Never really thought about that...until coming to Korea.

Now, the OP talks about PR slogans. Who really cares? Does anyone really think some PR slogan makes any real difference? Do you go Malaysia, truly Asia, and think, man, I gotta go there. I don't. Though, I have been to Malaysia and it is an interesting place. Thumbs up from me.

But, you take a look at the popularity of the Korean Wave throughout Asia and one of things you hear is that people like the shows because the Actors are so handsome and the Actresses are so beautiful. It is part of the allure of Korean dramas.

So, no doubt the reputation of Korea is that of liars and beautiful people.

Well earned too IMHO.

Korea is a great place but don't believe everything people say and enjoy the beauty!

A western man has a better time in Korea I think. Lots of pretty Korean gals who want to have a western boyfriend, or even a western husband.

However, there is beauty in every country. The amount of makeup, copycat styling, and cosmetic surgery in Korea negates its 'high beauty index', if you get my meaning. IMO

I always love when it comes to criteria for being developed to one that ensures that Korea is not developed, but their own country is.

Spitting+Driving on Sidewalks= 3rd World

Ubiquitous bullet proof glass at gas stations, banks, and convenience stores+Massive Drug Problems= Our developed country is special, please try to understand.

OR

Mandated segregation of fans to prevent violence+Youth gangs and no-go neighborhoods= Social problems that in no way classify us as "developing"

I think pretty much every country out there that has youth gang problems, big time drug use, and people having to hide behind bulletproof glass should be qualified as "developing".
