Hi all
32 year old male
British passport
First Class Honours degree in English and Linguistics from English university

Would like to teach in Seoul, any age groups, preferably no weekend work
What sort of package should I be looking for (pay, flights etc.)?
Can anyone recommend any employers/agents?
Thanks in advance |

No experience.
Not in the country.
Green as grass and fresh off the plane.
You aren't anything special and no different than the last 22,000 newbies who came to Korea in the last couple of years to be "EFL teachers" (Korea eats up about 15,000 new teacher applicants every year).
It's going to be a bog standard, 1 year contract - just the same as the next newbie looking for a free flight to Asia.

As to agencies, this isn't Thailand. http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=208470&highlight=7777

LOL at the OP who thought he was going to be in demand but got confronted with the cold hard truth--you aren't any more special than someone with a degree in dog grooming. That's the way it works here. You will earn 2.1-2.2 million won. |

No weekend work means public schools. They are hard to come by in Seoul.
No age group preference: kindergartens jobs are easy to find in Seoul.
Middle East/China looks better for you. |

I didn't say I was anything special. I don't need a free flight. Just stated my position and after some advice as never been to South Korea. Pretentious oldies really should learn to read... |

Thought I was going to be in demand? With no experience in teaching or of South Korea? Just stated some facts and asked for some advice. LOL at your bitter tone. Why even bother to reply? Though thanks for the facts, that's all I wanted. |

Seoul + Any Age Group + No Weekends
This is what 90% of job applicants are looking for, some will defer kindy (little kids).
This is what you should expect~
STANDARD CONTACT:
2.1-2.2 million pay
Paid flight
Housing
Benefits- Insurance, Pension, Sick days, Holidays
You might get lucky and get something better if you are willing to wait things out for several months.
If you are willing to work outside of Seoul you can afford to be a little more picky. |

Thanks for the reasonable response. I'm in no rush, got offered a job with Chungdahm Learning through a recruiter called Aclipse a few months back. I've seen mixed reviews about them so just doing some research about what/who to look for. Obviously, I'm in no position to be picky, but jumping straight at the first offer isn't wise. |

It will be very difficult not to work weekends. Maybe if you teach kindergarten. I personally think Chungdahm is a decent place for a newbie to work for their first year in Korea. If you work for the big branches (not a franchise) you won't have to deal with the risks that come with smaller hakwons (like not getting paid on time, or getting screwed on some aspect of your contract). Chungdahm is an unimaginative job, but it's pretty straightforward, for what it's worth. |
