So it's official-- from October 12th- taxi fares will increase by 25%
3,000 for basic fare..
Drivers may be fined 200,000 for refusing service..
Also extra fees for traveling to different provinces..
All in all-- reasonable enough I suppose. |

BTW, The base fare in NYC is $2.50 USD, http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passenger/taxicab_rate.shtml |

Wish the rates were a lot higher, would put pressure on the subway system to offer 24/7 service |

So weird...Jeollanamdo had already increased to 2800 several months ago. I can't believe we were paying more than Seoulites. |

It's already illegal for taxis to refuse service here, not that it does much good. |

"Along with the price hike, the city government also introduced a set of measures aimed at providing better service for passengers.
Taxi drivers caught declining passengers in accordance with their preferences will face 200,000 won in fines along with forcibly taking up to 20 hours of relevant education.
Passengers will also be allowed to easily report such drivers if they simply learn the car's four-digit number. Currently, they are required to know the full plate number."
I'm not sure if proper laws have been in place already but this seems more definitive..
It is easier to report taxi drivers behaving improperly if anything else..
I can see some changes for sure. We shouldn't expect the same hostility at certain times...
These are some positive changes.
I may be one of the few expecting a shift in attitude from taxi drivers though but time will tell.
Their hand will be forced to if the average punters start reporting them more frequently. That 25% fare may well be the catalyst..
Punters will expect more.. |

Right.... because subways operate 24/7 in other countries where taxis are by far more expensive (Japan/Canada/etc), right? |

What is the phone number for reporting these taxis?
I'd really like to know what it is, because these taxis are everywhere (perhaps I should start video recording their refusals, just to be sure). |

Far more expensive. NO. The Base fare is $3.45 in the second largest city in Canada.

And yet, having lived there, I can tell you that taxis are not nearly as affordable as here. The rates go up quickly, and taxis are not so common on the streets so they're not convenient either. If I stayed out late, I took a night bus or (preferably) got a lift from a friend. Since I didn't live downtown, it would have been at least a 30$ cab fare, so I never took taxis. Friends who have visited me who HAVE lived fairly central have also all mentioned how surprised they were at how cheap the Seoul taxis were.
So how much more expensive are you hoping Seoul taxis will be so that the subway runs 24/7? If Montreal is not far more expensive to you, and you are hoping for far more expensive so that subways will run later, how much more expensive are you looking for?
Anyway, even if they WERE far more expensive, it doesn't mean metros will run any later. I submit London as an example. Their cabs are very expensive by anyone's standards, and their subways end very early. MUCH earlier than Montreal's. Please make your argument for how taxi fares and all night subway systems are related. Is your case solely built around New York City? |

Yes, it's illegal but with proviso. Driver can refuse if:
1. passenger does not appear to be able to pay the fare
2. passenger appears to be a violent individual intending to harm.
Drivers 'know' (wink wink) weigooks are pennyless street thugs, so you guys have no chance. |

Don't you also need some ID # that's inside the taxi? |

??? Driver ID# would be useful for disappointed passengers reporting on rogue taxi drivers.
What's that got to do with from the point of view of taxi drivers flipping passengers? |
