Hi all,

I teach this one adult student at my hakwon and she seems a little too friendly. She brought up out of nowhere that she was single and likes western men. She asks me personal questions which makes me uncomfortable. I don't know what to do, I feel she is trying to get me to ask her out. Anyone have suggestions?

Yea, either stop being such a BETA or hand her phone number to me. I'll know what to do with it.

If she's good looking ask her out! If she's not or you're just not interested just tell her your into dudes or you already have a girlfriend.

She is good looking but she had eyelid surgery and a nose job(there are small scars present if you look closely). I don't want to lie to her but I feel if I say I'm not into her she will do something stupid.

That is possible she might do something stupid. I can remember my first year here when I was eating at a small kimbop joint. It was a quiet weeknight and while I was eating a piece of paper flew out of nowhere and landed on the table next to my tray. I looked up and I saw a girl walking away, I'm like ok this is weird. I looked at the note and (I can't remember exactly what it said) but read something like do you have a girlfriend? then she left her phone number.

I was like hell yeah, this dating thing is going to be real easy here! I texted her and we ended up meeting at the same kimbop restaurant the next night. Now keep in mind I barely saw her as she was leaving but I thought hey, how bad looking could she be? Right?

Wrong, she was very unattractive, just not my type at all. Right from the get go I started back peddling saying how I was sort of seeing someone else and I would feel bad dating 2 girls. She called BS because in our text messages the night before I said I was totally available and was raring to go.

At this point she starts acting weird, not the typical weird where the girl acts like a baby and pouts. But getting twitchy, nervous, just angry in the head. She speaking very loudly, not yelling but enough to where other people were starting to look at us. I was feeling real uncomfortable so I started to apologize to get her to just shut up. She started slamming her fist on the table, saying how badly I treated woman, that I was a horrible person.

I slowly got up and left. She didn’t follow me out, thank god!

So yes, there is a chance is you turn her down she might get angry.

Sigh... life's rough ain't it?

Seriously though, no need to worry about it; don't freak out or tell her anything in particular. Just keep doing your job, smile, be polite. It'll pass. As long as you don't make a move, she'll lose interest eventually. If in the event she asks you out, just smile and tell her you can't date students, or just use the eternally BUSY excuse.

Or...share the love and pawn her off on someone else. I'm sure someone would be happy to take her out for a coffee or something (ahem! cough...cough!) Laughing

Do the same things you did back home to discourage women keen on you but that you weren't interested in. That situation did happen, right?

He probably wasn't having one to one lessons with women he wasn't interested in back home.

In Canada I never had to teach a woman English 2 hours a week one on one. So the situation is different. If I wasn't interested in a woman I would tell her but if I tell the adult student this as I said before she will likely do something stupid.
