Some general guidelines for peaceful co-existence. I'm not a fascist but at least have some sensitivity about the following.

1. No smelly food.
-better to find an empty room where your spicy chips won't be inflicted on everyone within a mile radius.

2. Keep your voice down.
Excessive noise is essentially violating the rights and the space of others. Some people talk like foghorns in an attempt to own the room. This is the workplace, not a nightclub.

3. Eat quietly.
Snorting, snuffling, burping, gulping, squishing etc are all violations of other peoples precious moments of peace at breaktime.

4. Curb attention-seeking behaviour.
The teachers room is not a bar.

5. Don't butt into other peoples conversations.
Some conversations are for anyone, but not all. If you want a conversation, start your own, don't continually hijack other peoples.

6. Don't invite your students into the staffroom.
Its OK occasionally but remember the staffroom is supposed to be a haven for teachers away from the kids.

How to Behave Like a Regular Human Being:

1. If something annoys you so badly, deal with it when it arises. Someone being noisy? Ask them to be quiet. Someone bump into you? Say something to them. Someone staring at you? Stare back.

2. Don't go online and incessantly complain about the same things over and over when those things don't have a solution through anonymous messageboards. You are merely attention-seeking and looking for a nice little backpat from others who can't seem to understand that the only way to deal with behavior you don't like is to deal with the actual behavior at the time it arises, not whine and whine and whine and whine about it to like-minded people.

If people like you were more willing to say something in person instead of venting and bitching on Facebook/Twitter/forums/etc, perhaps progress could be made in what you're looking for.

That is true, and in some cases that is precisly what I do.

I didn't expect every person replying to simply follow the same reaction of the first person to reply.

My intention was to get other people to add their own, to create an amusing discussion.

The suggestions above all seem reasonable to me. If people are overstepping them, they might do well to stop & consider. I'd call it common courtesy.

The office is a shared space.

Be careful about being the guy laying down rules though. Puts you in a dicy spotlight. Are you the boss?

Agree. Look at this guy's post history....nothing but a litany of complaints. He must be a total loser to have so many issues with Korea yet continues to renew as an ESL teacher year after year.

My criticism was not of Korea. I never even mentioned Korea.
It was of staffroom behavior. It could apply to anywhere in the world.

Your logic seems to be that unless someone is 100% high as a kite 100% of the time, then he/ she needs to leave the country.

Last friday you made a complaint, a bitter criticism about Korea.

You're not going to find a staffroom like that in Korea.
